Fort Bliss, TX MQS2 Optometry Technician

Job Title: Optometry Technician

Location: Soldier Readiness Processing Center (SRP) William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) 18511 Highlander Medics St Fort Bliss TX 79906 and outlying clinics.

Tentative Start Date: 1 April 2026

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 0500-1630 (SRP operational hours). Up to 48 mission-driven overage hours per FTE may be required annually beyond regularly scheduled duty hours as authorized by the Government.

Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or GED; Completion of an optometric technician course or formal optometric on the job training or training and certification obtained through the Army Navy or Air Force Optometry Technician program.

• Experience:

• Minimum of one (1) year of recent experience within the last two (2) years working as an Optometry Technician or Ophthalmic Technician in a clinical or medical setting.

• Experience performing vision screening tests and collecting preliminary eye examination data.

• Experience assisting optometrists during eye examinations and readiness-related vision assessments.

• License / Certification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA or Red Cross) required.

• Other Requirements: U.S. Citizenship required.

Responsibilities:

• Support Soldier Readiness Processing (SRP) vision operations by assisting with optometry services for service members undergoing mobilization demobilization redeployment and separation.

• Perform preliminary vision testing including visual acuity measurements color vision screening depth perception testing and other readiness-related optometry screenings as directed.

• Collect and record patient history information related to vision and eye health prior to provider examination.

• Prepare service members for optometry evaluations by positioning patients and operating diagnostic equipment as directed.

• Assist optometrists during eye examinations by operating screening instruments and supporting examination flow.

• Prepare clean and reset optometry examination rooms and equipment between patients to support high-volume SRP throughput.

• Escort service members through optometry processing stations and ensure timely movement through SRP vision workflows.

• Accurately document assigned screening results and support activities in MHS GENESIS or other Government-designated systems as directed.

• Support surge optometry operations during peak MOB/DEMOB cycles including extended duty hours when mission required.
