Project Summary

The Graphic Designer supports the National Science Foundations (NSF) Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA) by creating high-quality visual content that communicates complex scientific technical and policy information in clear engaging and accessible formats. This role contributes to digital communications media outreach events and video production efforts that inform policymakers researchers and the public about NSFs mission and impact.

Role Summary

The Graphic Designer provides professional visual design illustration and animation services in support of NSF communications and outreach initiatives. Working closely with writers multimedia staff researchers and communications leads this role transforms complex concepts into visually compelling graphics while ensuring accuracy accessibility and alignment with NSF branding standards.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Design graphics and layouts for a wide range of digital and print materials including web content reports fact sheets and outreach products.
  • Develop visually engaging Microsoft PowerPoint presentations and visual storytelling materials.
  • Create infographics illustrations and data visualizations that clearly convey scientific and technical information.
  • Design visual materials for press kits media events conferences trade shows and exhibits.
  • Develop animated graphics and motion elements for video productions web content and social media platforms.
  • Conduct subject-matter research and collaborate with researchers and subject-matter experts to ensure scientific accuracy.
  • Apply and advise on NSF branding guidelines and visual identity standards across all products.
  • Ensure all visual content complies with Section 508 accessibility requirements and federal accessibility standards.
  • Collaborate with writers editors web staff and multimedia producers to support integrated communications initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Graphic Design or a related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Three (3) or more years of professional graphic design experience.
  • Expert proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications including Photoshop Illustrator InDesign and After Effects.
  • Demonstrated experience creating graphics for science technical or research-focused communications.
  • Experience supporting federal public affairs communications or research environments.
  • Familiarity with scientific illustration and data visualization principles.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting communications for federal science or research agencies.
  • Familiarity with accessibility best practices for visual and digital content.
  • Experience collaborating on multimedia or video production projects.
Work Environment and Requirements
  • Primarily on-site at NSF Headquarters in Alexandria VA.
  • Standard work hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
  • Telework may be available with prior approval from the COR.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
