Job Summary

Job Title: Lab Tech
Location: Portales NM
Job Description:
The Laboratory Technician performs clinical laboratory testing as a generalist in a safe environment that supports good laboratory practices. This role requires the ability to function across all areas of the clinical laboratory including blood bank chemistry hematology microbiology serology/immunology urinalysis and phlebotomy. Routine phlebotomy services are performed as needed.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Promote the mission vision and values of the organization.
  • Process specimens perform laboratory tests and report accurate test results.
  • Perform high-complexity testing as authorized and within scope of education training and experience.
  • Follow established procedures for specimen handling testing reporting and recordkeeping.
  • Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing is conducted in the same manner as patient testing.
  • Adhere to quality control policies; document quality control activities calibrations and equipment maintenance.
  • Follow established procedures when test systems fall outside acceptable performance limits.
  • Identify issues affecting test performance or result reporting and correct them or escalate appropriately.
  • Document corrective actions taken when performance specifications are not met.
  • Use age-appropriate communication methods for phlebotomy and laboratory customer service.
  • Assist with monitoring inventory of supplies reagents and test kits.
  • Communicate critical test results according to laboratory policy.
  • Interact professionally with laboratory leadership clinical staff coworkers and healthcare customers.

Qualifications:
  • Associate or bachelors degree (or higher) in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution or compliance with CLIA testing personnel qualifications.
  • Certification or registration through ASCP AMT NCA or U.S. Department of HHS/HEW.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or obtain within 30 days of hire).

  • Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Ability to work irregular hours including on-call shifts.
  • Physically demanding high-stress laboratory environment.
  • Exposure to blood body fluids communicable diseases chemicals radiation and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to push pull lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Full range of body motion including lifting and positioning patients.
  • Frequent reaching bending stooping handling objects speaking hearing and visual acuity.
