Salary Range: $3000 to $6000 per month
A candidate with strong backend engineering experience and document generation or rules-based systems exposure would be highly considered for the maximum offer. Final compensation will depend on interview performance skills and experience.
About the Role: We are hiring a Full Stack Engineer (backend-focused) to work with the Lead Engineer and Co-Founder to replace their current third-party tool with a custom intake and document generation system. The role centers on building a scalable backend that supports complex rules-based workflows across all 50 US states including conditional logic and server-side document generation. This is a contract-to-hire position for someone who wants long-term ownership and growth in a small collaborative team.
Core Responsibilities:
- Backend System Development and Architecture:
- Design and build a custom backend system to replace existing third-party form software.
- Develop scalable APIs that integrate with the existing frontend portal.
Implement advanced business logic and conditional workflows driven by state-specific legal rules. - Create maintainable data structures to support multi-state form logic and automation.
- Document Generation and Automation:
- Build and maintain server-side document generation workflows.
- Ensure accurate population of legal forms based on intake data and conditional logic.
- Support PDF generation and structured output for legal documentation.
- Logic and Rules-Based Engineering:
- Translate complex legal requirements into clear maintainable application logic.
- Implement conditional paths such as children vs no children asset ownership and financial disclosures.
- Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders to validate logic accuracy.
- Collaboration and Ownership:
- Work directly with the Lead Engineer on architecture decisions and code reviews.
- Partner with the Co-Founder on complex business logic and edge cases.
- Collaborate with an external QA engineer to ensure system reliability and quality.
- Take long-term ownership of the backend system and contribute to platform scalability.
- Future Enhancements and Integrations:
- Support future roadmap initiatives such as financial data integrations (e.g. Plaid).
- Contribute ideas for improving automation performance and maintainability.
- Use AI tools intentionally as a development aid not as a replacement for sound engineering.
Required Experience and Skills:
- Experience: Minimum 3 years in a Full Stack or Backend Engineering role.
- Backend Expertise: Strong proficiency in backend development including APIs and server-side systems.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with and modern JavaScript frameworks/environments.
- Solid understanding of core concepts like data structures conditional logic and rules-based systems.
- Experience with server-side document or PDF generation.
- Infrastructure & Tools:
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (e.g. AWS).
- Experience using version control (Git Bitbucket) and project management tools (Jira).
- Soft Skills:
- Strong ability to solve complex problems and reason through intricate workflows.
- Excellent communication skills and proven ability to collaborate effectively within a small dynamic team.
Nice to Have:
- Experience using PHP is an advantage.
- Experience building form engines intake systems or workflow automation platforms.
- Exposure to financial data integrations such as Plaid.
- Experience working with legal compliance-heavy or regulated systems.
- Comfort working in startups or small engineering teams.
- Experience supporting products used by non-technical or older user populations.
