JOB SUMMARY

The Field Service Technician performs on-site diagnostics maintenance and repair of a wide range of heavy equipment in support of operational reliability and customer service excellence. This hands-on role requires advanced mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills independent judgment and the ability to work safely and effectively in demanding field conditions. The position supports fleet readiness across diverse challenging job sites and plays a key role in maintaining equipment performance and uptime.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform maintenance diagnostics and repair on heavy equipment including but not limited to heavy-duty trucks and semi-tractors material spreaders 6-wheel drive military-type vehicles excavators skid steers high-pressure pumps 25-ton or smaller bulldozers graders cranes underbody blades dump bodies snow plows crawler tractors and trailers backhoes trailers street sweepers aerial towers and man lifts.
  • Diagnose service and repair various systems found on pieces of heavy equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls air brake systems transmissions computer-controlled automatic and 13-speed manual transmissions propane-powered equipment and pneumatic systems.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions in the equipment and make repairs.
  • Service and repairs track drive sprockets rails idler wheels hard bars and track adjusters. Hydraulic reversers final drives brake hands steering clutches and hydrostatic transmissions.
  • Fabricate modify and install special equipment or replacement parts using welders torches sets plasma cutters and metal cutting saws.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and adjustments on fluid levels hoses belts brakes tires and clutches.
  • Change filters and oil and lubricate vehicles and motor-driven equipment.
  • Service diagnose repair and maintain speed tandem drive axles with air or electric shift hydrostatic driven heavy duty multi-axle suspensions both conventional steel and air springs.
  • Tune gas and diesel engines service valves fuel filters turbochargers pressure check fuel filters adjust injector heights fuel racks governors etc.
  • Diagnose disassemble repair replace and reassemble components for heavy equipment systems including braking systems; cooling systems; drivetrains axles and transmissions; electrical systems (12- and 24-volt); exhaust and emissions control systems; HVAC systems; hydraulic and air systems; steering and suspension systems; and coupling devices such as fifth wheel and pintle hitches.
  • Overhaul and replace engines and rebuild components.
  • Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment using fleet maintenance and management software.
  • Prepare work orders and parts needed to complete the project.
  • Keep tools equipment and work areas clean organized and in good working conditions.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior technicians in mechanical repair procedures. Perform road tests to evaluate vehicle performance and verify repair quality. Provide instruction and training in the proper methods and processes for equipment repair inspection and preventative maintenance.
  • Perform inspections on a variety of heavy equipment in the field.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy-duty equipment.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment diagnostic tools computerized service manuals and onboard diagnostics (OBD) systems.
  • Strong proficiency in welding metal fabrication and use of cutting tools to modify or repair parts on-site.
  • Skilled in electrical system troubleshooting including wiring sensors and electronic control units (ECUs).
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills with the ability to evaluate data.
  • Proficient in the use of fleet management and maintenance tracking software for documentation and reporting.
  • Exceptional time management skills.
  • In depth understanding of the basics of the repair and maintenance of both gas and diesel vehicles and equipment.
  • Familiarity with hazardous waste regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written in order to deal effectively with a variety of interpersonal relationships and situations.
  • Ability to be a team player.
  • Good working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications presently used by the Company. Ability to learn new applications.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing technical training and certifications to stay current with evolving heavy equipment technologies.
  • Ability to work by yourself with minimal supervision at various locations around Alaska.
  • Ability knowledge and agility necessary to complete installations and/or repairs.
  • Ability to use diagnostic scanners and electronic tools.
  • Ability to maintain skills as technology advances.
  • Ability to actively listen and provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to do business ethically with customers vendors and co-workers.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple repair tasks efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions.
  • Ability to be detail oriented; superior organizational follow-up and records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations detect unobvious facts and issues and exercise resourcefulness in resolving problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings schematics and repair manuals accurately.
  • Ability to learn and understand the Companys Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance.
  • Ability to work in a Native Corporation multi-business environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience performing diagnostics maintenance and repair on heavy equipment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to remote job sites including fly-in and marine-access locations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT physical as required by the position.
  • Vocational technical or college degree in Industrial Equipment Construction Equipment Diesel Technology or a related field.
  • Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
  • Experience working in remote or Alaska-based field environments.
  • Valid state drivers license and must be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Companys Driving Policy.
  • Must be able to pass drug driving and background screenings.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud due to the running of the equipment. There is often limited exposure to chemical fumes generated by the equipment and some jobs require an employee to be exposed to inclement weather conditions and/or hazardous work environments. Yukon Equipment has a fast-paced multi-tasking working environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. Work is frequently performed outside of the office at indoor and outdoor job sites including remote fly-in and marine-access locations. Adaptability regarding schedule and design changes travel and occasional overtime for immediate field support or bid processing may be necessary
