Position Summary
The Sergeant assists in the overall management of the Department s field-based patrol and protective services operations. Assumes direct responsibility for assigned shift. Provides leadership and guidance to all subordinates ensuring a professional and timely response to calls for service critical incidents and emergency situations. Fully participates in the prevention and suppression of criminal activity protection of life and property and preservation of peace.
Essential Functions
- Performs routine patrols of the campus community.
- Responds to alarms calls for service critical incidents and emergency situations.
- Investigates reported or discovered suspicious activities unusual occurrences and criminal offenses.
- Enforces relevant state statutes city ordinances and university regulations.
- Renders assistance to members of the campus community as appropriate.
- Conducts field investigations. Interviews of victims witnesses suspects and complainants.
- Prepares professional reports that fully document all known facts surrounding the incident under investigation.
- Provides follow-up services as directed.
- Self-initiates and/or assigns officers to complete timely reports on all incidents of criminal activity suspicious persons/circumstances motor vehicle accidents medical emergencies hazardous materials spills or intrusions or other occurrences that may impact university operations or personnel.
- Directs the activities of all Corporals Campus Safety Officers and support staff assigned to shift.
- Reviews and approves written reports and assignments.
- Assists the Captain in establishing minimum staffing requirements and developing associated work schedules.
- Coordinates the activities of all Field Training Officers (FTO) assigned to shift.
- Provides training for officers as necessary.
- Assigns and schedules trainees.
- Ensures that training processes are completed in a timely manner.
- Recommends trainee officers for advancement to regular status and/or identifies trainee officers with developmental needs.
- Evaluates the performance of assigned staff.
- Initiates corrective action to control inappropriate behaviors.
- Delivers constructive guidance to personnel not meeting standards and expectations.
- Initiates disciplinary action in officer conduct cases. Identifies positive behaviors and attributes of contributors and performers.
- Provides insight and assistance to the Commander in conducting annual performance reviews.
- Inspects uniformed staff to ensure the condition and completeness of uniforms equipment appearance and work habits.
- Makes on-the-spot corrections of all noted deficiencies.
- Consistently imparts professional standards on all personnel.
- Investigates citizen complaints of officer misconduct discourtesy or other inappropriate behavior.
- Conducts investigation into complaints interviews all parties to the allegation evaluates circumstance and evidence makes recommendation of action and prepares a written report to the Captain and relevant senior managers.
- Participates in community outreach and public information initiatives.
- Conducts presentations and leads discussions on Campus Safety services and programs.
- Assumes membership in various campus and community committees.
- Fosters positive working relationships with faculty staff students and others.
- Acts as a liaison with law enforcement social welfare and emergency service providers.
- Works on special assignments as directed.
- Directly supervises staff on assigned shifts.
- Fully participates in the accreditation (CALEA) processes.
- Adheres to all Departmental and University policies procedures directives rules and regulations
- Participates in the interview panel during the Departments selection and hiring process when requested by Senior Management.
- Participates in the Divisions recruitment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
- Associates degree or equivalent credit hours with an emphasis in Criminal Justice Police Science or Security Management; or 1 years of related law enforcement/campus safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Internal DCS personnel candidates are required to meet promotional prerequisite of 180 days as Corporal as well as other promotional and professional development requirements.
- 1 years of progressive administrative or operational management experience
- Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado drivers license and be insurable under University guidelines; or obtain a valid Colorados drivers license within the required time frame.
- Pass a job-related skills examination.
- Pass annual physical agility test.
- Ability to successfully complete specialized training.
- Must successfully complete and maintain certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED Defensive Driving and PPCT (Pressure Point and Control Tactics).
- Must pass a complete background check to include criminal motor vehicle report and verification of employment and education.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical drug screen and human performance evaluation administered by a University approved physician.
- Possess or obtain a City and County of Denver Security Guard License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent with an emphasis in Criminal Justice Police Science or Security Management; or 2 years of related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2 years of progressive administrative or operational management experience
- 2 years of experience in the management of personnel Previous law enforcement recruit school and/or P.O.S.T. certification.
Working Environment
It is the policy of the Division of Campus Safety that all uniformed officers maintain a level of physical fitness to perform job related tasks that they may be called upon to do in the performance of their accordance with the policy a job-related physical agility test will be administered as part of the pre- employment testing process with the Division and then annually after hire. The physical agility test consists of the following:
Climb four flights of stairs
Drag a 125 pound drag dummy for 12 feet
Descend four flights of stairs
Run 100 yards The Physical Agility Test must be performed within in a three-minute time frame
Physical Activities
As field-based person Campus Safety Sergeants routinely work outside in all weather conditions. This position may be assigned to any shift or combination of shifts as deemed necessary by the Patrol Operations Captain or others in the Divisions senior management group. Campus Safety Sergeants are considered essential personnel and may be called upon to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage.

Hourly Rate:
The hourly rate for the position is $34.00.
