Job Summary

The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is seeking aSenior Accountant to Oversee fiscal activities with a primary focus on use of philanthropic funds and billing activities for the shared resources and translational science teams of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. This includes optimal use of accounts establishment of new accounts in multiple departments preparation and monitoring of expenditures and oversight of HCCC billing and charge back functions

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement of both on-campus (UI Health Care) and remote work within the state of Iowa upon completion of a 6 month onsite training period with the majority of work taking place on the U of I/UI Health Care policy work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location

Duties to include:

  • Align use of resources to support ongoing operations pilot funding and research startup of the HCCC members which span 6 colleges and 38 departments.

  • Determine when to divest UI Center for Advancement funds to meet HCCC commitments. Track commitments and recommend funding sources (from over 250 accounts). Analyze and prepare reports for multiple external constituents and internal leadership related to use of philanthropic funds and availability of resources.

  • Oversee HCCC billing and charge back functions. Lead billing mechanisms for HCCC managed shared resource facilities. Overseeing translational research billing and balance of institutional support. Train staff in using the system. Review billing activity created and monitor for compliance.

  • Create accounting entries; monitor departmental and unit account activities; perform monthly reconciliations on all HCCC unit accounts; review and sign off on TDRs.

  • Analyze accounts and prepare specialized reports; prepare monthly unit summarization reports for presentation to departmental leadership; develop specialized reports used to track HCCC commitments of CCOM UI Health Care and gift funds allowing for forecasting of available funds up to 3 fiscal years in advance; prepare ad-hoc reports and analyses to assist leadership with departmental decision-making.

  • Lead month-end and year-end closing of gift fund accounts. Work with multiple account representatives across the institution to ensure proper accounting of funds including pilot awards career development awards seed grant awards institutionally funded operations etc.

  • Analyze requests for purchases and other expenditures; provide recommendations on the appropriate sources of funding; review all transactions to assure accurate classification and appropriateness of expenditure; assure compliance with funding guidelines; reconcile differences; monitor all departmental procurement card activity and process payments; review and approve workflow transactions; coordinate and control departmental account activity.

  • Monitor funding sources and assure compliance with restrictions (either grant based or donor intent based).

  • Maintain journal and transfer entries for the HCCC and various units; open and close all departmental accounts and foresee need to create future accounts; serve as HCCC Who Key Administrator.

  • Responsible for analyzing donor requests and directing donations to the appropriate UICA accounts.

  • Responsible for evaluating alignment with use of donor accounts and adhering to donor intent.

  • Identify unusual account activity; follow up as appropriate assuring corrections have been submitted.

  • Assure departmental accounting goals and needs are achieved while maintaining compliance with UI and grant related policies and procedures.

Work Schedule: Monday Friday Hours generally worked between 7:00am-5pm

Pay Grade: 4A

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Business Administration or Accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum 1-3 years of accounting experience.

  • Proficient in computer software applications including Microsoft Word Excel and various databases.

  • Excellent written verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with grant accounting including receipts expenditures and reports.

  • Experience with budgeting and financial strategic planning.

  • Experience with UICA managed philanthropic funds.

  • Knowledge of University of Iowa business policies and procedures.
