General Purpose
The Village of Winnetkas Fire Department is seeking applicants for the temporary full-time position of Hydrant Intern. Key responsibilities include: examining maintaining and flow testing fire hydrants within the Villages of Winnetka and Kenilworth as well as parts of unincorporated Cook County.
Primary Duties:
- Check hydrants for damage to caps ports and threads
- Flow water from hydrants
- Read hydrant static residual and flow pressures
- Check that hydrants drain properly
- Clean and lubricate hydrant threads
- Change gaskets on hydrant caps when needed
- Replace and hand-tighten all caps on hydrants
- Check for obstructions around hydrants
- Manually log hydrant location and other pertinent information collected while inspecting hydrants
- Enter all data collected into the Fire Department database
- Prepare reports as need
- Perform other duties as assigned
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
- Ability to read road maps to locate fire hydrants
- Ability to exercise good judgment in analyzing problems
- Excellent organizational skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and ability to learn Fire Department software programs
- Ability to read clearly speak and legibly write the English language
- Valid drivers license with a good driving record
Other Requirements
This is a temporary position for the summer months in 2026 (late-May through August). Typical work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 40 hours weekly Monday through Friday. Work is performed in outdoor weather conditions and may be in close proximity to vehicular traffic.
Hourly Rate Range: $20 - $25 per hour.
