Job Summary

General Purpose

The Village of Winnetkas Fire Department is seeking applicants for the temporary full-time position of Hydrant Intern. Key responsibilities include: examining maintaining and flow testing fire hydrants within the Villages of Winnetka and Kenilworth as well as parts of unincorporated Cook County.

Primary Duties:

Check hydrants for damage to caps ports and threads
Flow water from hydrants
Read hydrant static residual and flow pressures
Check that hydrants drain properly
Clean and lubricate hydrant threads
Change gaskets on hydrant caps when needed
Replace and hand-tighten all caps on hydrants
Check for obstructions around hydrants
Manually log hydrant location and other pertinent information collected while inspecting hydrants
Enter all data collected into the Fire Department database
Prepare reports as need
Perform other duties as assigned

Desired Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
Ability to read road maps to locate fire hydrants
Ability to exercise good judgment in analyzing problems
Excellent organizational skills
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and ability to learn Fire Department software programs
Ability to read clearly speak and legibly write the English language
Valid drivers license with a good driving record

Other Requirements

This is a temporary position for the summer months in 2026 (late-May through August). Typical work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 40 hours weekly Monday through Friday. Work is performed in outdoor weather conditions and may be in close proximity to vehicular traffic.

Hourly Rate Range: $20 - $25 per hour.
