Job Summary

The UNIX Engineering group is responsible for the design and implementation of Linux infrastructure for Morgan Stanleys distributed systems. This team evaluates certifies integrates and maintains a diverse range of products including hardware operating systems such as Red Hat Linux and Solaris system services like DNS DHCP and LDAP as well as file systems encompassing AFS NFS and various cluster file systems. Additionally the group develops and maintains several in-house tools. The Configuration Management team within UNIX Engineering seeks an individual to assist in synchronizing inventory systems with the configuration management system.

This is a Lead Cloud & Infrastructure Engineer position at Director level which is part of the job family responsible for developing and maintaining solutions that support business needs.

What Youll Do in the Role:

  • Join a team of skilled and experienced technologists dedicated to maintaining and enhancing a large-scale globally deployed VMware-based platform.
  • Contribute to the management of Morgan Stanleys global virtualization plant which is a large globally distributed installation centrally configured and managed through a suite of tightly integrated open-source and proprietary tools.
  • Develop solutions to ensure that the heterogeneous platform remains straightforward to manage configure and support thereby maintaining a stable environment.
  • Work on the development of the provisioning system and other tools to support the platform providing APIs and a command-based user interface for system administrators developers and application support personnel to build and manage the configuration of virtual machines.


What Youll Bring to the Role:

  • Solid understanding of UNIX/Linux system fundamentals.
  • Proven ability to design and develop robust scalable and maintainable backend systems in Python.
  • Knowledge of Python frameworks.
  • Experience in optimizing performance and scalability of systems to ensure high availability and rapid response times.
  • Familiarity with at least one configuration management system.
  • Experience managing large UNIX/Linux environments including:
  • Setting up and maintaining continuous integration and testing frameworks.
  • Defining best practices and automating administrative tasks.
  • Writing and maintaining Ansible playbooks.
  • Effective troubleshooting skills across all plant components (hardware operating systems network storage).Ability to collaborate with other developers including participating in code reviews providing and implementing specifications and writing documentation.
  • Exposure to modern development tools and practices such as Git Jenkins agile methodologies and continuous integration.


Desirable Skills:

  • Experience working in large multinational enterprises in any industry sector demonstrating the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively within globally distributed teams.
  • Background in designing implementing and supporting large-scale production IaaS platforms particularly with virtualization technologies such as VMware.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities across hardware operating systems network and storage.
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages such as Erlang or Prolog.
