Role Overview

We are seeking a resilient empathetic and highly motivated Behaviour Mentor to join an inclusive secondary school with a dedicated inclusion base in Southcote Reading. This role is particularly suited to individuals who are passionate about working with students who require alternative or additional support to thrive within education.

As a Behaviour Mentor you will support pupils who find it challenging to manage their behaviour emotions or engagement within a mainstream school environment. Many of the students supported through the inclusion base may have experienced repeated difficulties in education including exclusion disrupted schooling or complex personal circumstances.

Your role will be to provide stability structure and consistent adult support helping students rebuild confidence develop emotional regulation skills and re-engage positively with learning.


Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The purpose of this Behaviour Mentor role is to support students who are at risk of exclusion or disengagement by offering tailored behavioural and emotional interventions. The school is committed to reducing exclusions and improving long-term outcomes through relationship-based and trauma-informed approaches.

Behaviour Mentors play a vital role in supporting students within the inclusion base as well as facilitating reintegration into mainstream lessons where appropriate. This role requires patience flexibility and a strong belief in the potential of every student.


Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor in Southcote your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 behaviour mentoring for students within the inclusion base

  • Delivering small group interventions focusing on emotional regulation self-awareness and social skills

  • Supporting students during reintegration into mainstream lessons

  • Assisting students during transitions break times and lunch periods

  • De-escalating challenging behaviour calmly and professionally

  • Supporting students during moments of emotional distress or dysregulation

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of individual behaviour plans

  • Working closely with inclusion staff teachers SENCOs and senior leaders

  • Monitoring progress and maintaining detailed behaviour records

  • Supporting restorative conversations and reflection following incidents

  • Upholding safeguarding procedures and maintaining professional boundaries

Students You Will Support

Students supported by the Behaviour Mentor may:

  • Display persistent challenging behaviour

  • Have SEMH needs ADHD or attachment difficulties

  • Experience emotional dysregulation or anxiety

  • Have a history of exclusion or poor attendance

  • Struggle to engage with mainstream education

Your role is to help these students feel safe understood and supported enabling them to develop trust in education and in themselves.


Who This Role Is Ideal For

This role is well-suited to individuals who:

  • Have experience working with young people in alternative provision PRUs or inclusion settings

  • Are calm patient and emotionally resilient

  • Can manage challenging behaviour confidently and compassionately

  • Are flexible and adaptable in their approach

  • Are passionate about inclusion and second chances

Graduates in psychology education youth work or social sciences are encouraged to apply as are experienced Behaviour Mentors seeking a more specialised inclusion role.


Essential Requirements

  • Experience supporting children or young people with behavioural challenges

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure

  • Commitment to safeguarding and inclusion

  • Willingness to undertake relevant training


Desirable Experience

  • Inclusion base PRU or alternative provision experience

  • SEMH or behaviour support background

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice

  • Relevant qualifications or training
