Internship Opportunity: Technical Services/Photogrammetry Unit Intern

Internship Duration: 10-week internship (May 26 2026- July 31 2026)

Position Overview

The Technical Services/Photogrammetry Unit is a specialized division dedicated to supporting North Carolinas transportation initiatives through advanced geospatial and photogrammetric technologies. The unit plays a critical role in creating and maintaining precise mapping and geospatial data that supports engineering design infrastructure development and project planning for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Utilizing cutting-edge tools like Bentley MicroStation and ArcGIS the team develops high-quality maps analyzes aerial imagery and performs data validation to ensure accurate and reliable geospatial information. The unit also manages and updates NCDOTs extensive geospatial data holdings provides visual quality assurance for critical projects and collaborates with engineers to produce vicinity maps and other essential geospatial products. With its expertise in geomatics and photogrammetry the team is instrumental in enabling efficient data-driven decision-making across the departments transportation initiatives.

The Technical Services/Photogrammetry Unit is seeking a motivated intern to assist with geospatial data organization analysis and mapping tasks essential to North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) projects. This internship offers hands-on experience with industry-standard tools providing valuable skills in photogrammetry geomatics and geospatial sciences.

Responsibilities
Data Organization & Mapping

oCreate organize and manage historical NCDOT aerial photography boundary data using Bentley MicroStation and ArcGIS.
oAssist with the preparation of orthorectified digital mosaics and other geospatial mapping products.
Data Maintenance & Project Development

oUpdate and maintain the Photogrammetry Units geospatial data holdings and digital image library of historical imagery.
oComplete a small photogrammetric project from planning through final delivery performing all associated tasks.

Quality Assurance & Review

oConduct visual quality reviews of imagery tiles including support for projects.
oLearn how final mapping files are reviewed and validated prior to delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

Educational Background

oPursuing a degree in Geomatics Civil Engineering Earth Science or Geospatial Science.

Technical Skills

oFamiliarity with or interest in Bentley MicroStation ArcGIS photogrammetric tools and geospatial technologies.
oGeneral computer skills with the ability to learn specialized mapping and engineering software.

Soft Skills

oDetail-oriented with a strong willingness to learn new technical concepts and workflows.
oStrong organizational time-management and problem-solving skills.
Internship Structure

Training:

oInterns will receive hands-on guidance to acquire the necessary technical skills for assigned tasks.
oDue to time constraints mastery of advanced skills may be limited during the internship period.

Evaluation:

oPerformance will be assessed based on the timely and accurate completion of assignments.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors masters or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past year.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
