Job Summary

POSITION SUMMARY

The Environmental Programs Division of SPR is seeking an environmental intern to join the Data & Regulatory Team for the summer of 2026 to help perform a variety of duties related to environmental data collection and sampling regulatory compliance data analysis and project work. The ideal candidate will have a passion for environmental policy regulatory compliance water/wastewater treatment data analysis and collaborative stakeholder engagement. This opportunity will also provide rewarding exposure to field work such as river sampling and inspections and to other business areas at SPR including laboratory pretreatment functions operations and business solutions.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Data & Regulatory Programs staff as assigned

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs analysis prepares technical reports and provides comments related to permitting reporting and data management activities.
  • Conducts data analysis develops analytics tools creates data visualizations and automates reporting of key information to regulatory agencies and internal end-users.
  • Conducts technical analyses on flows water quality and plant process data.
  • Performs field work and data collection at the plant and in the South Platte River watershed.
  • Prepares scientific research calculations and modeling.
  • Prepares technical reports; meets and coordinates with environmental programs department operations staff consultants contractors government agencies and utilities companies.
  • Develops and improves upon tools and business processes utilizing geospatial databases.
  • Utilizes GIS to produce maps drawings and graphics.
  • Operates accessory equipment scanners and plotters.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Currently enrolled and working toward a Bachelors Masters or other advanced degree in Environmental Science Watershed Science Engineering Chemistry Biology Data Analytics or a directly related field.

Work Experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to producing high quality work through independent or course-related projects previous internship experience or volunteer work.

Required Drivers License

  • Valid Colorado drivers license and a clear or acceptable MVR.

An equivalent combination of education training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

Working knowledge of:

  • Environmental concepts mathematics statistics and water chemistry
  • Data analysis and data management
  • Wastewater treatment processes (preferred)
  • Site compliance stormwater management environmental safety inspections (preferred)
  • Regulations environmental permitting compliance and codes (preferred)

Skills and Abilities

Computer Skills

  • Basic computer knowledge including but not limited to Microsoft Word Excel Outlook
  • Experience with Business Intelligence software such as Microsoft Power BI or Tableau for reporting data visualizations and analysis
  • Statistical analysis using R or Python preferred
  • ArcGIS or comparable geospatial software
  • Knowledge of environmental modeling software such as water quality modeling or water resources modeling preferred

Communication - Strong communications skills verbally and writing needed to maintain effective working relationships with contractors consultants and plant staff. Ability to work independently with broad direction and limited supervision.

Analytical - Ability to interpret and use information from engineering reports plans specifications regulations and technical documentation.

Mechanical Use of GPS equipment handheld field devices and field measurement devices. Field experience conducting water quality sampling preferred.

Mathematical - Advanced skills needed to perform scientific/engineering calculations.

HOURLY PAY RANGE

SPR Intern - $17.50 - $26.50/Hourly Pay Rate

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is to be performed onsite at the South Platte Renew facility and in the field within the South Platte River basin.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting; however may be performed on construction sites where there may be exposure to dust noise traffic and moving construction equipment; and/or at a wastewater treatment facility where noise irritants dust dirt bacteria hazardous chemicals/air/materials and fumes are present.
  • Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and over all types of terrain. May be exposed to risks typically associated with working around water chemicals electricity and other man-made and natural hazards.
  • Full range of body movements including stooping twisting kneeling bending leaning reaching climbing (heights) stretching and working in awkward positions. May stand for extended periods of time. Occasional light lifting (up to 15 lbs.).
  • Vision is needed for reading computer input recording and interpreting information such as blueprints and plans; speech and hearing are used to communicate with other employees over the telephone radio and in person. Work on computers and associated equipment for prolonged periods of time (4-6 hours daily).
