Description of Work

The Transportation Worker III performs semi-skilled and skilled roadway and highway maintenance work and may train on and operate equipment associated with higher-level positions. This position is subject to emergency call-back and scheduled night work during adverse weather conditions or other extreme circumstances.

Work includes but is not limited to installing traffic control and erosion control devices; clearing rights-of-way; grading roadways and machining unpaved roads; performing pavement repairs; installing pipe and completing other drainage-related tasks; inspecting contract work; and monitoring manual labor activities. The employee must be able to understand and act upon both verbal and written communications and may be assigned additional duties as needed.

On a regular and recurring basis the employee operates at least two pieces of equipment including but not limited to a backhoe tandem dump truck motor grader front-end loader forklift force-feed loader asphalt distributor asphalt patcher crack-sealing machine track excavator skid steer or sweeper. Equipment is used to perform maintenance tasks such as hauling asphalt aggregate or soil materials; plowing snow; spreading salt; compacting asphalt and embankments; sweeping roadways; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 / $34270 - $59973

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance pipe installation or asphalt patching.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe tandem dump truck motor grader front end loader forklift force feed loader asphalt distributor asphalt patcher crack sealing machine track excavators skid steer or sweeper

Additional Expectations:

Safety-toed shoes required. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment hand & power tools & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication to traverse steep & uneven terrain to lift 50 lbs. & to work in extreme temperature conditions.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
