The Heat Treat Technician is responsible for performing post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and thermal processing in support of nondestructive testing (NDT) operations. This role ensures materials meet required mechanical properties and industry codes through controlled heating and cooling processes while maintaining compliance with safety quality and customer standards.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:
Perform preheat post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) bake-outs and stress-relief processes per procedures and specifications
Set up operate and monitor heat treatment equipment including resistance heaters induction systems and thermocouples
Install and remove thermocouples insulation and heating elements
Interpret heat treatment procedures drawings and customer specifications
Monitor temperature cycles and document heat treatment charts and reports
Support NDT inspections by ensuring components meet required metallurgical conditions
Verify equipment calibration and maintain heat treatment records
Follow safety procedures including hot work and confined space requirements
Work collaboratively with welders inspectors and quality personnel
Maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or GED required
2 years of experience in industrial heat treatment PWHT or related field
Knowledge of heat treatment processes and metallurgy fundamentals
Ability to read and interpret heat treatment procedures and technical drawings
Familiarity with ASME AWS and customer heat treatment specifications
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in industrial environments
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Heat Treat Technician certification or formal technical training
Experience supporting NDT inspections in refinery power plant pipeline or fabrication environments
Knowledge of thermocouple placement chart recorders and data logging systems
