The position is based at the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) a leading interdisciplinary research centre focused on understanding and controlling biofilms and microbiomes to address sustainability challenges in urban industrial and health settings. SCELSEs research supports key objectives including improving water quality enabling waste-to-value conversion for a circular economy enhancing food security and developing sustainable environmental solutions through innovative microbial science applied to real-world problems.

Key Job Purpose

The Research Assistant will support laboratory and experimental activities related to the production and characterization of single-cell protein (SCP) derived from microbial processes. The role contributes to the generation of high-quality experimental data and materials that support downstream research activities within the Aquapolis Programme Tranche 1 R&D Programme an integrated initiative aimed at optimising Asian seabass research and production in Singapore.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct laboratory analyses to characterize SCP including proximate composition amino acid profiling and basic microbiological safety assessments.

• Perform physicochemical analyses of bioreactor influent effluent and mixed liquor samples to support monitoring of fermentation and bioprocess performance.

• Support the operation monitoring and routine maintenance of bioreactors and fermentation systems.

• Prepare process and provide SCP ingredients for downstream experimental use in accordance with project protocols.

• Collect process and organize samples and experimental data for internal reporting and documentation.

• Support laboratory safety procurement and basic bookkeeping activities.

Job Requirements

• Bachelors degree in Life Sciences Biotechnology Environmental Engineering Chemical Engineering Microbiology or a related discipline.

• At least 3 years of relevant research or technical hands-on experience in a laboratory or applied research setting.

• Experience in microbial cultivation fermentation bioreactor operation or bioprocess-related laboratory work is advantageous.

• Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures good laboratory practices and standard documentation requirements.

• Good written and oral communication skills for research work with strong organizational and time-management abilities.
