Job Summary

The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West Great South Upper wheatbelt and Peel Regions of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of Services including: GP Clinics Primary Health Care Counselling NDIS and community host various programs. SWAMS has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

About the Role

SWAMS is currently seeking an experienced and passionate Mental Health Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) Manager to lead our growing Mental Health and Social Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) portfolio.

This role provides strategic and operational leadership to:

  • Clinical Mental Health Team
  • Social Emotional Wellbeing Team
  • AOD Reintegration Program delivered at Bunbury Prison

The successful candidate will ensure culturally safe evidence-based services are delivered across all program areas while supporting staff strengthening partnerships and driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mentor and manage multidisciplinary clinical and SEWB teams to deliver high-quality culturally appropriate services.
  • Oversee the AOD Reintegration Program at Bunbury Prison ensuring best-practice service delivery and effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Provide operational leadership program oversight and workforce support across mental health and AOD programs.
  • Coordination and intake assessment of referrals into the mental health care coordination service in a timely manner.
  • Provide culturally sensitive case management services crisis management and therapeutic intervention to clients.
  • Build strong culturally respectful relationships with Aboriginal clients families and community members.
  • Collaborate with the Director Health and Social Services on strategy reporting and program development.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation clinical standards and funding requirements.
  • Contribute to service innovation and quality improvement initiatives.

About You

You will be an empowering leader with strong clinical knowledge cultural competence and a passion for making a difference in Aboriginal health.

Essential Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work Psychology Social Sciences Counselling and/or Nursing with postgraduate qualifications in Mental Health.
  • Practical experience working with Aboriginal clients families and/or communities.
  • Demonstrated team leadership or management experience in health mental health or community services.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of mental health issues and of the relevant therapeutic intervention.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in working with people in crisis and managing people with challenging behaviors
  • Demonstrated experience in a therapeutic counselling role with individuals couples and families including children and adolescents.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and stakeholder relationship skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Desirable

Demonstrated knowledge of and engagement with local mental health and social support services in the South West would be beneficial and desirable for this role.
