About the role
This role reports directly to the Chief Racing Integrity Officer (CRIO) and is directly involved in maintaining and upholding fair racing practices in Western Australia while enforcing the industrys integrity standards as set out in the Rules of Racing across the three Codes.
It includes managing the daily duties and operations of the Investigations Team and integrity compliance functions to ensure service level agreements with the Chief Stewards are met in accordance with Integrity Strategies and operational objectives.
This position also includes periodically officiating in the capacity of a Steward at a race meetings at a senior level and providing other support to team members within the Racing Integrity division which includes race day stewards and regulatory veterinarians.
Key Accountabilities
- Investigate or cause to be investigated any matter as directed or agreed by the CRIO or Code Chief Stewards of matters arising from the three codes of racing and wagering and present concise reports and evidence relating to these investigations.
- Carry out or cause to be carried out race day inquiries to detect illegal activity including stable inspections surveillance horse inspections interview of licensed persons and providing a policing presence in the bookmakers ring other betting areas and the racecourse as required
- Manage arrange and undertake testing for prohibited substances or other purposes licensed persons and racing animals including out of competition testing and testing at trials/trackwork etc.
- Manage and conduct inspections of licensed training premises including race-day and non-race day inspections of animals.
- Undertake strategic planning of investigative functions to ensure relevant KPI goals are attained with respect to inspection and testing levels
- Officiate as a Senior Steward at race meetings either as a member of the panel or as Steward in Charge as required directed and rostered from time to time.
- Assist with and attend steward inquiries as required including as a panel member.
- Liaise with the media and be available for interviews and commentary on racing matters.
- Review and update relevant risk registers including review of standard operating procedures of key functions and compliance with such procedures.
- Supervise and delegate duties to ensure delivery of services as required to the Chief Stewards. This includes undertaking staff selection staff appraisals and scheduling workload and training ensuring adherence to RWWA policy and procedures.
- Liaise with the Western Australia Police (WAPOL) and other external agencies on investigative matters surveillance activities and other issues related to the Statutory Laws of Western Australia.
Qualifications :
About you
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication negotiating and interpersonal skills with the ability to write comprehensive reports and briefs of evidence suitable for presentation in judicial proceedings both internal and external.
- Ability to liaise with the public and other external stakeholders.
- Possession of relevant WHS/OHS qualification
- Demonstrated experience as a Senior Steward or Senior Investigator within a racing or regulatory environment
