Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary contact for patients and families by phone addressing concerns triaging symptoms and escalating issues to providers as appropriate.
- Coordinate prescription refill requests ensuring accuracy compliance with pain management policies and timely provider review/authorization.
- Assist physicians with intrathecal pump refills.
- Complete pill counts for pain center patients.
- Provide patient education regarding medication regimens treatment plans and follow-up requirements.
- Provide verbal and written instructions to patients family or responsible parties for home care including general instructions and physician specific instructions.
- Conduct proactive follow-up calls to assess pain control adherence to treatment side effects and patient satisfaction.
- Collaborate with providers and the care team to support individualized pain management plans.
- Document all patient interactions and interventions in the electronic medical record (EMR) with accuracy and timeliness.
- Performs appropriate nursing duties during procedures using current nursing standards as well as hospital standards.
- Support care coordination between the Pain Center primary care providers pharmacies specialists and ancillary services (e.g. therapy imaging).
- Conduct in-office patient visits including vital signs medication reconciliation post procedure follow-up visits and basic nursing assessments.
- Assist with patient education related to lifestyle modifications safety precautions and adherence to controlled substance agreements.
- Remain knowledgeable of and follows the policies of the Organization (KSSH).
- Provide leadership to clinical support staff (nurse aides medical assistants and LPNs) as well as non-clinical staff.
- Participate in clinic meetings quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance activities.
- Actively support and uphold the mission and core values of KSSH.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage patients empathetically by phone and in person.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple patient needs prescription requests and provider communications simultaneously.
- Knowledge of pain management medications common side effects and monitoring requirements.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Commitment to patient safety confidentiality and compassionate care.
Qualifications
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Kansas.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required and/or obtained within 60 days of hire.
- Previous experience in a clinic or pain management setting strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of pain management techniques medications and procedures is desirable.
- Proficiency with EMR systems and Microsoft Office products.
Environmental and Physical Requirements
- Works in a temperature-controlled environment.
- Must be able to read write and speak English fluently.
- Requires cognitive skills for math reading filing and sterile technique.
- Vision requirements include near mid-range far and accommodation.
- Communication skills necessary to interact effectively with employees patients families and physicians.
- Hearing for low medium and high pitch.
- Physical ability for standing sitting crouching kneeling frequent walking reaching (above head and below waist) and lifting up to 30 pounds.
