Job Summary

The School District of Clayton is seeking an English Language Development (ELD) Specialist for the school year at Clayton High School and Wydown Middle School. The ideal candidate will bring strong academic preparation and broad-based knowledge of curriculum and pedagogy to support multilingual learners.

The focus of the ELD Program is to ensure that English Learner students have meaningful access to instruction and are supported in reaching their full academic and social potential as they navigate a new language curriculum and school culture. The EL Specialist monitors student progress collaborates with educators to support instructional planning and advocates for EL students and their families. This role works closely with school staff and community agencies to ensure students feel supported included and able to thrive.

The Successful Candidate:

  • Identifies and screens students who speak or understand two or more languages.

  • Completes the required state and district paperwork for EL students.

  • Provides building principals and the EL coordinator with updates on EL students.

  • Monitors language and academic progress of individual EL students.

  • Serves as a resource to classroom teachers in modifying lessons for EL students.

  • Participates in building teams identifying special needs of EL students.

  • Coordinates/provides building in-service on English Language Learners.

  • Demonstrates appropriate long and short term preparation for classroom instruction; provides opportunities for academic support and challenge.

  • Holds high expectations for all students and sees themselves as facilitators of student learning.

  • Organizes and uses a variety of teaching techniques strategies materials and technology to maximize the learning of each child individually and in group settings.

  • Assesses student progress provides students and parents with specific feedback and uses the results to adjust instruction as needed; serves as a communication link between school and home.

  • Keeps abreast of current developments in their field and continues to deepen their understanding of their discipline(s).

  • Establishes and maintains a functional attractive orderly and safe classroom environment that is conducive to student learning and builds a sense of community.

  • Manages discipline in accordance with administrative regulations school board policies and legal requirements.

  • Develops and implements a repertoire of strategies that support positive student behavior individually and in groups and foster individual responsibility self-control self-discipline and effective decision-making.

  • Demonstrates a respectful cooperative and caring manner with students and adults in the school community.

  • Assumes responsibility for the effective functioning of the school to include necessary non-instructional assignments and student management throughout the entire building.

  • Contributes to school effectiveness by collaborating with other professionals and participating in school and district activities.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested by supervising administrators.

Education: Bachelors Degree required. Masters Degree preferred.

Certification: Missouri teacher certification with required endorsements for subject and level assigned. Missouri certification in ESOL is required.
