Description

Emory University School of Medicine Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences is offering a full-time one year Abdominal Imaging Fellowship that involves a combination of supervised and independent patient evaluation and management progressively complex imaging interpretation and formal educational activities. The fellowship position entails provision of care commensurate with the housestaff physicians level of advancement and competence under the general supervision of appropriately privileged attending teaching staff.

This includes:

  • Participation in patient care that is compassionate appropriate safe and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
  • Developing an understanding of established and evolving biomedical clinical and cognate (e.g. epidemiological and social-behavior) sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care.
  • Developing an understanding of the ethical socioeconomic and medical/legal issues that affect graduate medical education and of how to apply cost containment measures in the provision of patient care.
  • Participation in the investigation and evaluation of their patient care practices appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence toward the goal of improvement of their patient care practices.
  • Demonstration of interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange with patients patients families and all levels of professional associates.
  • Demonstration of a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to a diverse patient population as well as an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care and the ability to effectively call on system resources to provide care that is of optimal value.
  • Participation in the educational activities of the training program and as appropriate assumption of responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students and participation in institutional orientation and educational programs and other activities involving clinical staff.
  • Participation in institutional committees and councils to which the housestaff physician is appointed or invited; and
  • Performance of the duties in accordance with the established practices procedures and policies of the institution and those of its programs clinical departments and other institutions to which the housestaff physician is assigned; including among others state licensure requirements for physicians in training where these exist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have completed or be scheduled to complete a US or Canadian accredited diagnostic radiology residency prior to July 1 of the fellowship year. Qualified applicants must hold an MD degree or equivalent and meet requirements for medical licensure in the state of Georgia.

Additional Details:

As part of their daily performance Abdominal Imaging Fellows are responsible for:

  • Interpretation of CT MRI ultrasound fluoroscopic and plain film examinations of the abdomen and pelvis. This includes all varieties of scans and indications including but not limited to:
    1. General exams for acute and chronic pain tumor evaluation chronic disease.
    2. Subspecialty urologic exams for hematuria stone disease renal ureteral bladder and urethral neoplasms
    3. Subspecialty gastrointestinal exams for bowel inflammation neoplasm perforation and ischemia
    4. Subspecialty exams of the liver pancreas adrenals spleen biliary tree gallbladder lymph nodes peritoneal and retroperitoneal spaces musculoskeletal structures and diaphragm.
    5. Subspecialty pelvic imaging including Ob/Gyn prostate pelvic floor dysfunction.
    6. Experience with CT Colonography MR PET and other highly specialized abdominal imaging procedures.
  • Preparation and participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards including
    1. Hepatobiliary
    2. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
    3. Genitourinary
    4. Gastrointestinal
    5. General Oncology
    6. Gyn oncology
  • On Call is shared evenly among the fellows. This includes nightly beeper call from home and weekend call. Weekend call includes in hospital (8 am - 5 pm) interpretation of overnight cases for Grady Health interpreted with preliminary readings by the overnight residents abdominal cases performed during the day. Beeper coverage from home is covered from 5 pm - 8 am the next morning.
  • Dedicated elective time to pursuit more in depth experience in abdominal imaging or to gain added experience in other areas within the radiology department. This can include procedural experience with the IR division.
  • Over the course of the fellowship fellows are given graduated levels of independence and depending on performance may earn the ability to get experience final signing reports. This is especially helpful when it comes time to transition into being an attending radiologist after fellowship is completed.

Coverage responsibilities and hours of duty may vary slightly when assigned to various facilities which include:

Grady Memorial Hospital (GMH)

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
