ROLE PURPOSE

The incumbent will support the Plant EHS Manager and interface with all levels of the plant organization providing technical safety and health support including day-to-day hands-on support for safety and health initiatives. This position requires the candidate to spend extensive amount of time (50%-70%) out in the plant.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

This work may require lifting 50 pounds to move objects. Additionally the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking standing or crouching on narrow slippery or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders stairs scaffolding ramps poles and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.

  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects such as size shape temperature or texture by touching with skin particularly that of fingertips.

  • Sitting: Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Handling: Picking holding or otherwise working primarily with the whole hand.

  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force to draw haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward downward or outward.

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

  • Visual ability: Sufficient to effectively operate office equipment including copier computer etc.; and to read and write reports correspondence instructions etc.

  • Hearing ability: Sufficient to hold a conversation with other individuals both in person and over a telephone; and to hear recording on transcription device.

  • Speaking ability: Sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and over a telephone.

  • Mental acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.

  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately loudly or quickly.

  • Repetitive motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist hands and/or fingers.

  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Included in this is abidance with our Life Saving Principles (LSPs) and our STOP WORK AUTHORITY which are developed to strengthen our workplace safety prevent serious injury loss of life. Responsible for quality and food safety within their realm of control.

Level 2 - Important Role:

  • Drive EHSQ excellence culture and improvements in area of responsibility

  • EHSQMS Element owner support

  • Focus on EHSQ systems policies procedures and their effects on day-to-day operations

  • Audit and review EHSQ effectiveness in area

  • All employees are responsible for:

  • Compliance with procedures that implement the requirements of the EHSQ policies and procedures

  • Being responsible for their own actions

  • Carrying out their work in a manner which does not present a risk to themselves others and the environment

  • Reporting all incidents defects hazards and inadequacies of procedures so that appropriate review and corrective action can be taken.

  • Suggesting improvements and being active in the general improvement of all systems and methods of work to ensure EHSQ supports activities and services are carried out in a safe environmentally responsible reliable and cost-effective manner.

Main Responsibilities

  • Inspect audit and monitor equipment work areas and work practices and procedures for compliance with established health and safety rules and regulations.

  • Assist in identifying preventing recommending control measures and eliminating safety hazards.

  • Conduct new hire safety training.

  • Conduct compliance audits.

  • Safety work order tracking.

  • Conduct Near Miss follow ups and investigations.

  • Conduct Annual Fall Protection Inspection.

  • Be visible in the Plant.

  • Be a member of the Plant Safety Committee.

  • Deliver safety training to include Safe Start.

  • Update site safety signage.

  • Maintain monthly reports including key safety metrics.

  • Trend and analyze safety data and report findings and recommendations to Plant Management.

  • Assist with maintenance and update of safety procedures.

  • Enter safety data into the Benchmark/Gensuite system.

  • Assist with Contractor Safety Program.

  • Assist with new and modified processes/equipment/product development to ensure safety is included at all levels of design through implementation.

  • Participate in safety & industrial hygiene reviews routine safety inspections and incident investigations making appropriate recommendations.

FOOD ENVIRONMENT HEALTH & SAFETY DUTY OF CARE

Food Safety:

  • Carry out responsibilities/duties according to food safety legal and quality requirements to ensure that our products are fit for human consumption

Environment:

  • Comply with all environmental standards procedures and work instructions always

  • Report any environmental violation or near misses to prevent any impact upon the local environment its inhabitants and Tate & Lyle

Health & Safety:

  • Adhere to the safety policies procedures and site rules

  • Fully participate in the safety program including reporting any incidents or near misses and auditing

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

The incumbent will be measured against site EHS Quality Production Reliability and leadership goals

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Associate degree in related field preferred.

  • Knowledge of OSHA/industry specific regulatory requirements/standards and official interpretations

  • Five years relevant experience in heavy manufacturing or construction environment Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Demonstrated competency in the technical and training skills required to fulfil the positions responsibilities. Ability to effectively motivate people to enlist needed cooperation in implementing effective safety programs.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work with personnel at all organizational levels.

  • Strong Computer Skills (database word processing spreadsheet etc.) Ability to focus on details and understand the overall impact of events and decisions.

  • Ability to deal with regulatory agencies consultants and other contractor personnel
