About the Position:
The Custodian position plays a vital role in maintaining City facilities that serve residents staff and visitors every day. Under general supervision Custodians perform a variety of cleaning and light maintenance duties in City buildings offices and surrounding grounds. This position also supports the setup and breakdown of rooms and equipment for meetings events and community programs.

The ideal candidate is reliable hardworking and takes pride in maintaining clean and safe public spaces. You are self-motivated detail-oriented and able to work independently while following established cleaning standards and safety procedures. You value teamwork communicate effectively and demonstrate professionalism when interacting with staff and the public.

Successful candidates are flexible physically capable of performing hands-on custodial work and comfortable working an early morning schedule to ensure City facilities are clean and ready for daily operations. Prior custodial or facilities experience is helpful but not required the City of San Bernardino welcomes motivated individuals who are eager to learn and grow within a municipal environment.


Day in the Life:
A typical day as a Custodian with the City of San Bernardino begins early in the morning to prepare City facilities before employees and the public arrive. You may start your shift by unlocking buildings conducting walkthroughs and prioritizing cleaning tasks for high-traffic areas.

Throughout your shift you will clean offices restrooms common areas and meeting spaces; restock supplies; operate custodial equipment; and ensure all areas meet cleanliness and safety standards. You may also assist with setting up rooms for meetings or community events move furniture and equipment and address special cleaning requests.

Youll work both independently and as part of a supportive Facilities team reporting maintenance concerns and helping maintain a welcoming professional environment across City properties. By the end of your shift youll leave knowing your work directly contributes to a safe clean and efficient City workplace.

What You Need to Qualify

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred; AND six (6) months of work experience at a commensurate level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses Certifications and Equipment:
A State of California drivers license.


Knowledgeof:

  • Proper cleaning methods.
  • Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand and power janitorial tools and equipment.
  • Safety practices related to the work.
  • Proper mixing and diluting of cleansers disinfectants and stripping agents.
  • Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
  • City policies procedures and standards.

Skill in:

  • Understanding and following written and oral instructions.
  • Completing assignments independently without immediate supervision.
  • Reading and writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Properly maintaining and operating power driving construction tools and equipment.
  • Providing customer service.
