Job Summary

We seek an individual inspired by our missionwhose beliefs align with our core values of integrity compassion inquiry andcourage and who reflects our core competencies to join our Upper School as an InstrumentalMusic Teacher- Band. This is afull-time one (1) year contract position starting in September 2026.

Compensation & Placement Salary is determined by the HavergalFaculty Grid ranging from $72185 $103105 for early-career faculty and$103457 $135699 for those with 6 years of experience. Final placement isbased on recognized teaching years degrees and Additional Qualifications(AQs) with levels increasing for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The Position:

The Upper School program at Havergal College is distinguished by opportunities for students to develop and learn in a diverse stimulating well-resourced and supportive environment. Experienced Intermediate/Senior Music teachers at Havergal College are high-level practicing musicians who model musical excellence for students and inspire them through their own artistic practice. They are confident in curriculum development and demonstrate an approach to teaching that reflects how girls learn. Teachers support all learners with diverse strategies and approaches and are willing and able to differentiate instructional strategies. Classes are engaging and dynamic; teachers genuinely enjoy their work and are approachable available knowledgeable genuine and supportive.

As members of the Upper School facultyteachers engage in the work of the Upper School collegially and supportively. They demonstrate an understanding of the importance of parents aspartners in their daughters education by maintaining open collaborative relationships with them. As life-long learners faculty members demonstrate acommitment to actively seeking professional development. The music teachersoffer extensive co-curricular opportunities for students to engage in musicbeyond the classroom in addition to actively participating in other aspects ofschool life.

Specific Accountabilities:

Planning and Preparation of Learning

  • Understandhow to use knowledge of student developmental stages and current educationalresearch to make appropriate and thoughtful instructional decisions in a musicclassroom.
  • Workcollaboratively with the Upper School Music Department Head to develop and deliver a consistent alignedand rigorous program of study.
  • Developeffective long-range unit and lesson plans that demonstrate the principles ofa teaching for understanding framework and reflect the Ontario Arts curriculumexpectations.
  • Demonstratean understanding of assessment principles reflective of current assessmentpractices that are appropriate in the music classroom.
  • Modelbest practices for using technology in the classroom to support the curriculum and students developmental stages.

Setting the Learning Environment

  • Demonstratecompassion acceptance insight and interest in developing students potentialand capacity.
  • Modelthe schools values through actions and words when dealing with studentsparents and other adults in the school.
  • Demonstratean understanding that students learn through active intellectual engagement.
  • Createa trusting learning environment for students by acting consistently fairlyopenly and honestly and by having clear expectations for all students.
  • Ensureappropriate behaviour in the classroom and on school property.
  • Createa learning environment where students thinking is visible valued and part oftheir everyday experiences.
  • Createa safe and engaging learning space that reflects students developmental needs.

Instructional Practices

  • Ensureinstructional practices reflect advanced planning and preparation and the time available.
  • Ensurequestions and instructional strategies promote student thinking and extend their understanding knowledgeand skills.
  • Userelevant pedagogy assessment and evaluation along with resources andtechnology in planning for and responding to students individualneeds.
  • Ensurestudent learning is appropriately documented and reported.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Upholdthe professional and ethical standards of practice as defined by the OntarioCollege of Teachers.
  • Activelyparticipate in professional growth activities (membership in professionallearning communities completing professional reading setting professionallearning goals).
  • Maintainconsistent professional supporting and encouraging relationships withcolleagues.
  • Ensurecompliance with all school policies and practices and maintain all requireddocumentation.
  • Maintainan open line of communication with parents and work with them as partners intheir daughters educational journey.
  • Activelylead music co-curricular programming and participate in the life of the schooloutside of the classroom.

Qualifications Knowledge and Experience

  • Relevantuniversity qualifications at the Bachelor level including a Bachelor ofEducation with Intermediate/Senior qualifications and a Bachelor of Musicdegree.
  • Proficiencyin multiple instruments.
  • Activeperforming musician with professional-level musicianship.
  • Certificationfrom the Ontario College of Teachers and be a member in Good Standing.
  • AnHonours Specialist or graduate degree in education and/or music in music is anasset.
  • Acomprehensive understanding of current educational practices in the area ofcurriculum planning and implementation assessment and instructional strategiesrelated to Arts Education and music.
  • Understandingof how to apply the current research on girls and learning.
  • Knowledgeof differing learning needs and strategies for supporting all kinds oflearners.
  • Acommitment toward continued professional development and growth; and
  • Stronginterpersonal organizational time-management and communication skills.
  • Self-starterable to work in a self-directed manner appropriate to changing needs.
  • Aproven commitment to working successfully in collaborative environments.
  • Experiencein an independent school is an asset.
  • Energycommitment and a readiness to be a leader in the co-curricular program and aparticipant in the diverse life of the school community particularly in theco-curricular arts/music program.
