Job Summary

Required:

  • Applicants must currently be enrolled in a Juris Doctor program at an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Demonstrated discretion professionalism and the ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Experience using legal databases and productivity tools (e.g. Microsoft platforms Westlaw CanLII)

Assets:

  • Experience in labour and employment human rights or policing-related coursework or similar work experience
  • Experience in Student Legal Services or similar advocacy work
  • Demonstrated interest in public sector or public safety organizations or initiatives

Hours of Work:
36.9 hours per week Monday Friday.

Salary Range:
91M Salary Grade: DP1 $68369.00 to $85461.29 ($35.495 to $44.368 per hour).

**1 Temporary Full-time summer position for 4 months commencing in May 2026**

This year marks the first time the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Human Resources Legal Services (HRLS) Branch is welcoming a summer student (1L or 2L) to its growing legal team. If you are self-motivated with a keen interest in labour employment human rights privacy contract civil WCB and OHS law within a policing context EPS welcomes your application for this position within the HRLS Branch.

EPS is a large complex public-safety organization with over 2800 sworn and civilian employees. As a summer law student you will gain direct and hands-on exposure to real-world legal issues that arise in a modern policing environment balanced with mentorship and a supportive learning culture within HRLS which values a strong work ethic in the context of maintaining a meaningful work-life balance.

The lawyers in the HRLS Branch take a collaborative approach to problem-solving regardless of seniority and are committed to meaningful mentorship skill development and a positive student experience.

Some key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Conducting legal research and preparation of written memoranda
  • Assisting counsel with conduct of a variety of litigation with a focus on labour arbitration and hearings before the WCB Alberta Labour Relations Board and Alberta Human Rights Tribunal
  • Assisting counsel with drafting policy / procedures and assisting with analysis and interpretation in a variety of areas including legislation policy and collective bargaining
  • Working in direct collaboration with sworn members and civilian members of the Human Resources Division in supporting EPS Leadership on matters involving accommodation performance management discipline and labour relations
  • Attending meetings training and internal consultations with HR professionals and other EPS leaders
  • Participating in privileged file reviews legal strategy discussions in relation to highly sensitive matters and professional development opportunities
