Role Overview The Apple Pi Math Specialist is a dedicated middle school interventionist responsible for supporting students who have fallen behind in key pre-algebra and algebraic concepts. You will work with small groups (Tier 2 & Tier 3 intervention) to solidify the "core" skills necessary for high school success.
Your goal is to move students from simple computation to complex algebraic reasoning ensuring they dont get "sliced out" of advanced math opportunities in high school.
Key Responsibilities
Targeted Remediation: Deliver focused instruction on the most critical middle school math hurdles: rational numbers (fractions/decimals) ratios/proportions and early algebraic expressions.
The "Pi" Connection: Explicitly teaches the transition from concrete arithmetic to abstract geometry and algebra (variables formulas and functions).
Data-Driven Grouping: Analyze student data to group them by specific skill gaps (e.g. a "Fractions" group vs. a "Geometry" group) rather than just general grade level.
Confidence Building: Help students overcome "Math Anxiety" by creating a low-stakes high-support environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process.
Typical Qualifications
Education: Bachelors degree in Mathematics Education or Middle Grades Math.
Certifications: State Teaching Certification in Middle School Mathematics (Grades 5-9 or 6-12).
Experience: Experience teaching pre-algebra or general math to adolescents; familiarity with common "math blocks" students face at this age.
Skills: Proficiency with manipulatives (algebra tiles fraction bars) and digital math tools (Desmos GeoGebra).
Why Teachers Choose This Role
Specialized Focus: You only teach mathno homeroom duties no recess duty no multi-subject planning.
Critical Impact Window: Middle school is the "make or break" point for STEM careers; you are the safety net ensuring students stay on track for High School Algebra 1.
Small Group Environment: Work with 5-10 students at a time allowing for deep relationship building and personalized attention that isnt possible in a 30-student classroom.
Compensation & Benefits
Job Type & Schedule
Commitment: Once a week (sessions typically run after school)
