Course Descriptions and Outcomes

Course Number/Name: DATA 101 Introduction to Data Analytics

Course Description:This course provides an introduction to data analytics. Students will learn how experts use predictive techniques and statistical reasoning to make data driven decisions in areas such as marketing finance sports healthcare genomics environmental studies etc. Students will be exposed to some of the special techniques and tools used in big data analysis gaining hands-on experience analyzing real datasets exploring different questions and trying out the tools. Ethical issues such as security and privacy will be explored. Core outcomes met: IL V. Offered Fall Spring.

Course Objectives:

    • Students will learn about key terminology in analytics. They will learn how to use these terms in oral presentations and written reports.
    • The main purpose of this class is to introduce students to analytical methodology such as regression models classification models clustering and text analytics that practitioners use on their daily jobs. They will learn how to apply the methodology and to interpret results.
    • Students will learn how to transform business problems into analytics frameworks. Students will develop the ability to recognize formulate and analyze business problems using analytics tools. Students will also learn about the key components that need to be included in any analytics plan.
    • Students will learn the basics of analytical programming with Python.
    • Information Literacy:The course will provide students with multiple experiences in analyzing questions theses or problems and collecting and evaluating related information for the purpose of producing evidence-based responses.
    • Vocation:The course will provide students with multiple opportunities to reflect upon how vocations are present across different areas/dimensions of their lives and articulate an authentic sense of their callings in response to specific needs in the world and through meaningful roles of service to others.



Qualifications

Previous teaching experience and relevant experience in the subject area are desired. Business subject areas may include accounting business finance investments operations information systems statistics marketing sales sport management economics human resource management business law and other related fields. Masters degree in the content area required PhD preferred.
