SUPERVISION:Works under the supervision of the Principal. Evaluated by the Principal or ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed within an elementary school environment. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Curriculum Planning and AssessmentDemonstrate knowledge of the developmental levels of students in the classroom and the different ways the students learnDemonstrate knowledge of the significant theories practices and programs for developing reading skills and reading knowledge of phonemic awareness and phonics: principles knowledge and instructional knowledge of the theories research and practices for reading instruction in the academic and use of appropriate programs materials and technology for reading and use diagnostic instruments to use to determine student strengths and a variety of informal and formal reading child and adolescent development and the timing of formal reading approaches and practices for writing instruction including assessment of writing skills and their relationship to methods to support classroom teachers and tutors in the improvement of reading instruction including consultation techniques and professional developmentDesign units and lessons with measurable objectives that are aligned to the state standards common core and adopted curriculum of the Hampshire Regional School DistrictCollect and analyze data from various sources including formal and informal assessments observations performance evaluations and teacher and administers the remedial reading programming Interprets student needs and progress in reading remediation to the classroom teacher and the parents. Prepares written progress and Community EngagementMaintain open and effective communication with parents staff and administration about student learning progress and gradesConfers with parents concerning individual students having special reading problems or requiring special remedial help and with any parents requesting such a CultureParticipate actively in team/department/faculty meetingsContinuously seek out ideas for improving practice and actively participate in professional development opportunities and the educator evaluation processObserve and implement the rules and regulations established for the school as outlined in the school handbook and by administration Perform any other task/duty required or requested that is related to maintaining services and student records in compliance with Federal and state law regulation and AND EXPERIENCE:MA License Reading Specialist preferred Masters Degree preferred Bachelors Degree requiredCurrent knowledge of MA ELA Curriculum Frameworks and Common CoreCurrent knowledge of established literacy programs interventions and assessments such as Orton GillinghamExperience with inclusion and de-escalation strategies Superior interpersonal skills/ability to communicate and interact with parents staff and CORI Check required before employment beginsFederal Fingerprint Check required before employment beginsPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Physical and Mental RequirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
