The Personal Support Worker functions as an integral member of the Minors and Surgical Day Care team by providing clinical and environmental support. Performs duties related to patient care under the direction of the RN RPN and/or physician in accordance with hospital standards policies and procedures. Must have a good understanding of aseptic technique principles of infection control and universal precautions.

The Personal Support Worker provides personal care for patients and supports patient flow within the surgical department as required which includes Minor Procedures Pre-op Clinic and SDC. The Personal Support Worker communicates effectively with patients staff and families and provides excellent customer service at all times. Responsibilities include turning over treatment rooms in a very fast paced environment to maintain uninterrupted care terminal cleaning of the treatment rooms portering for needed surgical equipment assisting patients with activities of daily living including the use of mechanical lifts measuring vital signs practicing to the scope of their education. Documentation in the electronic record is required for care provided. Other responsibilities include portering patients and ensuring the appropriate removal of used equipment linen etc to maintain a clean and safe patient care environment. The incumbent demonstrates professional responsibility and demonstrates actions consistent with hospital policies and procedures. This position works Monday to Friday 8 hour shifts 10:00 - 18:00

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Registered with the Health and Supporting Care Providers Oversight Authority (HSPCOA) - required
  • Personal Support Worker (PSW) Certificate from a recognized college/private career college or school board is required
  • OR attendant course required
  • Central Service Association of Ontario (CSAO) Medical Device Reprocessing Techniques Classroom Course is a definite asset.
  • 2-3 years current experience as Personal Support Worker required
  • Recent experience as a perioperative attendant required.
  • Current BCLS certification required
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of patient populations
  • Proficient computer experience and excellent keyboarding skills is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Proven dedication to an interdisciplinary team approach
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required
