Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Senior Anatomical Pathology Technologist in the Anatomic Pathology department. This role is responsible for all activities supporting the receipt and preparation of surgical cytology and autopsy consultation with the Anatomical Pathology Supervisor and Manager the Sr. Technologist possesses the authority responsibility and accountability for the accurate performance of applied methodologies. Data is used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and the evaluation of responsiveness to treatment. The Sr. Technologist applies clinical knowledge independent judgment advanced techniques and decision-making to achieve accurate and age-appropriate data which leads to quality patient care.

This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure that specimens meet acceptance criteria for accessioning into the LIS (per policy) and reject as appropriate.
  • Accession specimens into LIS by sub-specialty and appropriately triage the specimen for gross examination based on priority (intraoperative consultations & lymphoma work-ups tissue bank rush and routine processing).
  • Grosses biopsies and performs additional testing as necessary.
  • Cutting and staining of intraoperative consult frozen sections.
  • Preparation and processing of cytology specimens.
  • Participation in autopsy evisceration/duties as trained and assigned
  • Provides patient-focused care in a clinical setting through the accurate performance of routine and complex tests through the pre-analytic analytic and post-analytic stages.
  • Answers inquiries regarding specimen handling results and other technical information.
  • Appropriately assists clinicians with requests and seeks out resources necessary when information is not available to answer questions.
  • Coordinate activities at the front desk (organize paperwork answer phone calls direct inquiries to appropriate staff etc.)
  • Provides support in the evaluation validation and implementation of new laboratory procedures equipment and processes.
  • Helps to resolve technical problems advanced troubleshooting make critical decisions and obtain external assistance if necessary.
  • Evaluates need for training education and helps to create educational resources job aides and training resource material.
  • Leads unusual occurrence and specimen investigations (delayed missing mislabeled contamination etc.)
  • Daily maintenance of equipment in the gross room/cytology and autopsy suite.
  • Initiates and documents troubleshooting and problem solving to resolve issues.
  • Ensures completion of quality control maintenance and quality assurance documentation.
  • Maintains sections inventory including both supplies and specimens and notifies supervisor of any shortages or problems.
  • Assists in training new employees students pathology residents others.
  • Assists in new testing procedures and equipment validation and implementation.
  • Participates in peer interviews of other Anatomic Pathology Technologists.
  • Participates in educational and training activities to acquire new skills maintain technical relevance and improve proficiency. Provides deficiency and quality reports in LIS systems.
  • Maintains quality metrics for the MDI board.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least three years prior related work experience in Anatomic Pathology is required.
  • Bachelors or advanced degree in clinical laboratory science life sciences or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Must satisfy CLIA 88 personnel qualifications performing high complexity testing.
  • Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of word processing spreadsheet and laboratory/hospital information systems.
  • Proven ability to use computers for data entry retrieval and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work within narrow timeframes outstanding organizational ability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maneuver/lift bulky containers.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
