The Department of Customer Services Division of Motor Vehicles Driver License Branch Motor Vehicle Control Section is hiring for aMotor Vehicle Control Inspector IIlocated at the Kapahulu Vehicle Reconstruction Inspection Station. This is a working supervisory position in which you will supervise and work alongside Motor Vehicle Control inspectors to perform inspectional and investigative duties. This position is also responsible for ensuring that businesses engaged in transporting passengers comply with safety and operating requirements and that abandoned and derelict vehicles are removed from Honolulu streets.

What You Will Do:
  • Supervise and work alongside Motor Vehicle Control Inspectors to conduct inspections and investigations.
  • Assign and review daily inspection and investigative work.
  • Investigate complaints related to passenger transportation and abandoned/derelict vehicles.
  • Oversee enforcement actions related to abandoned and derelict vehicles.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence respond to inquiries and appear in court as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At the time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Three (3) years of experience in inspectional investigative instructional or repair work which shall have included ascertaining the overall mechanical operating and safety condition of motor vehicles including or supplemented by one year of experience in the inspection and/or investigation of businesses engaged in transporting passengers or goods for hire.

Applicable Skills Needed:
  • Knowledge of state and local laws rules and regulations pertaining to traffic safety and to common carrier operations

  • Knowledge of mechanical functioning of motor vehicle safety devices and equipment

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle safety test equipment

  • Knowledge of inspectional and investigative methods and techniques

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision

  • Ability to interpret and explain laws rules and regulations

  • Ability to assign supervise and coordinate the work of others

  • Ability to review reports and make recommendations

  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public

  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid appropriate drivers license (automobile/Type 3) prior to appointment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a special police commissionprior to completion of probation. During the probationary period selectees shall be fingerprinted photographed and subject to a background investigation by the Honolulu Police Department.
