The Spectrum Sharing Simulation Intern position resides in the Wireless Technologies department at CableLabs. This department conducts research and development in new and emerging wireless technologies that include 5G 6G Wi-Fi and spectrum-sharing strategies. Our team plays a crucial role in developing industry standards and technical regulatory policy for mobile and Wi-Fi network design deployment service delivery and operations in licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

The Wireless Technologies group at CableLabs is seeking candidates for a summer intern this role you will be involved in spectrum-sharing studies and interacting with operators regulations and standard bodies. The project will likely make direct impacts on industry as well as generate papers with solid contributions. The internship could be extended after the summer depending on mutual interests.
What Youll Do
- With regulators globally exploring spectrum sharing between cellular (5G/6G) and Wi-Fi networks (802.11ax be and bn) coexistence research has become a critical field requiring sophisticated modeling and this role you will participate in the development of a high-fidelity link-level simulation framework using NS-3.
- The intern will assist the team to design and generate simulations and use results to provide recommendations on coexistence strategies and solutions.
- The intern will also assist in support activities that include:
- Develop and extend a link-level simulation framework to analyze cellular and Wi-Fi coexistence in shared spectrum bands.
- Implement PHY-layer models for cellular (e.g. LTE/5G/6G) and Wi-Fi (e.g. 802.11ax/be/bn) including modulation coding and waveform characteristics.
- Incorporate realistic channel models including path loss shadowing fading and interference coupling between cellular and Wi-Fi links.
- Compare the NS-3 link-level simulation with an in-house designed system-level Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate statistical performance under randomized network topologies and traffic conditions.
- Validate simulation results against standards specifications (3GPP IEEE 802.11) and available measurement or reference data.
- Visualize and interpret simulation results using plots and summary statistics.
- Document simulation assumptions methodologies and findings in technical reports papers or presentations.
- Collaborate with senior engineers/researchers to refine models and explore new coexistence techniques
QualificationsWhat Is a Must Have
- Currently pursuing aPh.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering Computer Science or a similar field with an emphasis on Telecommunications.
- Comprehensive knowledge of wireless communications radio propagation channels antenna MIMO and key physical layer and MAC layer techniques.
- Hands-on experience with simulation tools such as Python or C/C and Matlab.
What Will Set You Apart
- Senior Ph.D. student is preferred.
- Knowledge of regulatory spectrum policy and standard bodies spectrum-related requirements.
- Knowledge of 5G NR 802.11 or satellite communication system physical layer design.
- Knowledge of terrain and clutter path loss models.
- Experience using link-level simulation tools like NS-3 is preferred.
- Excellent analytical skills and critical thinking skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated and willingness to learn.
