This Primary and Nursery School in Aylestone is recognised for its inclusive nurturing environment and strong pastoral support. Serving a diverse Leicester community the school places a high priority on emotional wellbeing early intervention and behavioural support alongside academic development.
The leadership team understands that early behavioural challenges can affect long-term development if not addressed. Through a combination of behaviour mentoring SEND provision and pastoral systems the school supports pupils with SEMH needs ASD ADHD attachment difficulties and other social or emotional challenges.
With increasing pupil need across Nursery Reception and Key Stage 1 the school is seeking a skilled Behaviour Mentor to join the pastoral team.
The Behaviour Mentor will support pupils experiencing difficulties with behaviour emotional regulation and social interaction. You will provide direct support in classrooms small group sessions and during unstructured periods such as playtimes or lunchtimes.
You will work collaboratively with teachers EYFS staff SENCO and parents to ensure consistent behaviour strategies and interventions are applied across the school.
Provide 1:1 behavioural and emotional support to pupils in Nursery Reception and KS1
Lead small group interventions focused on social skills emotional literacy and self-regulation
Support children during classroom activities transitions and unstructured periods
Assist pupils in managing emotions and behaviour during playtimes and lunchtimes
Implement and monitor individual behaviour support plans
Employ restorative play-based and trauma-informed approaches
Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation for pupils
Observe assess and record pupil progress and intervention outcomes
Contribute to planning review meetings and multi-agency support discussions
Build strong professional relationships with parents carers and external agencies
Work collaboratively with teachers EYFS staff SENCO and pastoral teams
Uphold safeguarding and child protection policies consistently
Promote a culture of inclusion empathy and mutual respect
The successful candidate will be patient empathetic and emotionally resilient. You will understand that challenging behaviour is a form of communication and respond consistently and empathetically.
You should demonstrate:
Experience in Primary Nursery or EYFS settings
Knowledge of SEND SEMH ADHD ASD and attachment-informed practice
Confidence delivering behaviour interventions and monitoring outcomes
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Reflective practice and proactive problem-solving
Flexibility and adaptability in supporting pupils and staff
Relevant qualifications in education childcare psychology or youth work are desirable.
The school provides structured induction supervision and access to CPD in SEMH SEND behaviour management and early intervention. Behaviour Mentors have clear pathways to teaching SEN support or pastoral leadership.
