The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the talented team at the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS). As a Student Quaternary Geology you will provide both field and office support for the Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation (SAGE) this project the AGS is collaborating with the Government of Alberta to conduct hydrogeological characterization geologicalmappingand modeling of NeogeneQuaternary sediments and Cretaceous bedrock and regional electromagnetic geophysical surveys to improve understanding of groundwater availability and connected surface water resources.

You will have the opportunity to work alongside a team of highly motivated and experienced geologists and earth scientists contributing to innovative solutions that advance geoscience knowledge. What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Provide fieldassistanceto AGS geologists conducting surficial geology and landscape mapping.

  • Perform geomorphic interpretations using a range of imagery resources and field data to develop surficial geology maps for regions of Alberta in a GIS environment.

  • Assist AGS staff with updating and verifying Quaternary databases as part of the ongoing review of legacy data.

  • Assistin collecting data used for subsurface and hydrogeological characterization of Alberta geology.

  • Compile organize and manage select groundwater data from various sources to support AGS staff.

Whatwerelooking for in you:

  • Currently enrolledin the second year or higher of a Bachelors degree program in Earth Science Geology or a relatedfield.

  • Proficient in GIS software with solid computer skills and working knowledge of MicrosoftOffice applications.

  • Completion of an introductory hydrogeology course is considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Self-motivated with the capacity to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision.

Additional Information:

  • Proof of enrollment in a registeredpost-secondaryinstitution including enrollment in the semester following the work term or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.

  • A Pre-placement Medical and afully validClass 5 drivers licensealong with a positive driving record are required due to the fieldcomponentof this role.

  • Training will be provided as needed (e.g. First Aid). The role includes fieldwork and travel for site visits and team-building activities.

  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
