The Certified Athletic Trainer & Fitness Center Coordinator is a full-time 12-month exempt professional position responsible for providing comprehensive athletic training services to Yakima Valley College student-athletes and coordinating the daily operations of the YVC Fitness Center. This role promotes student success by delivering injury prevention evaluation treatment and rehabilitation services; ensuring compliance with NWAC and institutional health and safety standards; and managing fitness center programs that support a diverse student population including individuals with disabilities.


This position exercises independent professional judgment requires specialized certification and state licensure and performs responsibilities with minimal supervision in coordination with the Director of Athletics and the Dean of Student Services.

Essential Tasks

Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Services:

  • Provide comprehensive athletic training services including injury prevention evaluation treatment rehabilitation and return-to-play support.
  • Conduct safety walk-throughs pre-participation screenings and hazard identification for athletic facilities.
  • Coordinate medical referrals and communicate with physicians specialists and other healthcare providers.
  • Maintain HIPAA-compliant medical records injury reports and treatment documentation.
  • Complete submit and track secondary insurance claims for student-athlete injuries.
  • Develop and implement emergency action plans for athletic practices and events.
  • Provide ongoing health education to student-athletes and coaching staff.
  • Maintain professional certification continuing education and state licensure requirements.

Fitness Center Operations & Program Coordination:

  • Oversee daily operations of the YVC Fitness Center ensuring safety equipment readiness and cleanliness.
  • Supervise train and schedule Fitness Center staff and student athletic trainers.
  • Provide member and course orientations emphasizing safety protocols and proper equipment use.
  • Coordinate maintenance repairs and equipment purchases with the Director of Athletics.
  • Maintain confidential membership files safety waivers and participation records.
  • Develop and promote diverse wellness fitness and educational programs for campus and community users.
  • Ensure compliance with campus policies NWAC standards and risk-management practices.

Administrative & Instructional Support

  • Assist Physical Education faculty in implementing fitness and wellness instruction.
  • Maintain accurate enrollment attendance and course progress records as required.
  • Provide course orientation materials aligned with instructor syllabi and departmental expectations.
  • Recommend improvements to athletic training operations safety practices and facility programming.
  • Communicate professionally with diverse populations including students faculty staff and community members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics or Dean of Student Services.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in Athletic Training Exercise Science Kinesiology or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Current certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC/BOC).
  • Washington State Athletic Training License (required by RCW 18.250).
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Valid Washington State drivers license.
  • Familiarity with NWAC rules safety standards and intercollegiate athletic program operations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of professional experience as a certified athletic trainer.
  • Experience working in a community college or higher education environment.
  • Experience supervising student employees or staff.
  • Experience coordinating fitness/wellness programs or managing recreational facilities.
ABILITY TO:
  • Evaluate treat and manage athletic injuries using established clinical protocols and evidence-based practices.
  • Exercise independent professional judgment in determining treatment plans and return-to-play decisions.
  • Respond effectively to medical emergencies and provide immediate care.
  • Maintain accurate confidential medical records and insurance documentation.
  • Establish and maintain a safe clean and inclusive fitness and training environment.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students coaches faculty staff and healthcare providers.
  • Train supervise schedule and support student staff and part-time workers.
  • Develop and deliver wellness and fitness education for diverse groups.
  • Manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Work evening and weekend hours as required for athletic practices competitions and events.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Principles and practices of athletic training including injury prevention evaluation treatment and rehabilitation.
  • Anatomy physiology kinesiology and biomechanics as they relate to athletic performance and injury.
  • Emergency response procedures including development and execution of emergency action plans.
  • Infection control sanitation standards and safety practices for athletic training and fitness environments.
  • HIPAA requirements and proper handling of confidential medical information.
  • NWAC rules eligibility standards and athletic compliance expectations.
  • Fitness center operations equipment maintenance and wellness program development.
  • Methods for training supervising and supporting student and part-time staff.
  • Cultural competence and strategies for serving diverse populations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift carry push and pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stand walk bend and move throughout athletic and fitness facilities for extended periods.
  • Ability to respond quickly and physically in emergency medical situations.
WORK SCHEDULE:

Standard Schedule: Monday Friday 9:00 AM 6:00 PM

Alternate Summer Schedule: Monday Friday 9:00 AM 6:00 PM

Flexibility may be required during peak periods or special projects.
