About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for a Peer Support Worker to join Drug and Alcohol Clinical Services (DACS) within Hunter New England Local Health District. This role is based at Newcastle Pharmacotherapy on Hunter Street offering a vibrant inner-city location close to cafés restaurants and scenic views of the Hunter River.
As a Peer Support Worker you will use your lived experience of drug and/or alcohol treatment services to provide meaningful support education and advocacy to people accessing DACS. You will play a vital role in strengthening consumer engagement improving service access and ensuring the consumer voice is embedded in service planning and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Provide peer-based support education and guidance to people accessing Drug and Alcohol treatment services

Build effective partnerships with consumers clinicians and other health care workers

Advocate for consumers by representing their ideas concerns and perspectives within DACS forums and meetings

Support clients to navigate health services and access relevant community and clinical supports

Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including allied health nursing and administrative staff

Promote harm reduction principles and a recovery-oriented non-judgemental approach to care

About You
You are an empathetic approachable and resilient individual who draws on lived experience to connect with others in a meaningful way. You are comfortable working with diverse populations and are committed to supporting people experiencing alcohol and other drug-related challenges.

You will demonstrate:

A strong understanding of the issues affecting people who use drugs and/or alcohol and present to drug treatment services

The ability to work effectively with people attending Drug and Alcohol treatment services as well as health care workers

Proven ability to advocate for and support people accessing Drug and Alcohol treatment services

A non-judgemental person-centred approach aligned with harm reduction principles

The ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
