Job Summary

The Boston University Libraries seek a Library Communications Specialist to advance the strategic communication goals of the University Libraries with a focus on leading student-oriented projects and supporting consistent messaging branding and outreach strategies across the BU Libraries system. The Specialist creates student-facing communications and marketing campaigns promoting library services and resources; and supports engagement initiatives that encourage undergraduate and graduate student research learning discovery and working with student employees to create promotional campaigns the Specialist ensures library materials are accessible and relevant to students and provides meaningful opportunities for students to engage peers and the broader BU community through prepared communications and graphic design work. The Specialist also works closely with colleagues across library departments to provide communications-related support to outreach and events and to assist in the creation and distribution of materials guidance and other resources. Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Library Communications Manager the Specialist additionally furthers the librarys strategic interests in the areas of advancement community and staff engagement and public relations.
The Library Communications Specialist will:
Student Engagement & Communication
  • Manage the Communications Office Student Employee team coordinating social media design and marketing projects focused on promoting student services and other library resources.
  • Develop social media strategies and plans creating scheduling and monitoring content across channels and integrating social media strategies into larger communications campaigns.
  • Ensure social media plans include appropriate content for all library audiences and advance the librarys strategic goals.
  • Produce written visual and multimedia content for various communications channels including print collateral outreach materials social media and web content and digital and in-person signage.
Marketing Promotion & Event-related Communication
  • Partner with library staff to promote library services and elevate their professional expertise and activities.
  • Provide communications support to promote and execute library events workshops and other campus outreach and to engage event attendees.
  • Execute regular marketing campaigns promoting library services events and special initiatives and support the distribution of promotional materials.
Support and Coordination of Strategic Communications
  • Distribute guidance and templates and facilitate internal information sharing.
  • Participate in internal communications projects to encourage staff engagement
  • Support staff in the creation of communications materials to ensure quality messaging and brand consistency.
  • Coordinate requests and review processes for printing promotional materials multimedia projects and other interdepartmental projects.
  • Draft materials that build support for and awareness of library programs and student services among donors partners and peer institutions.
  • Maintain a bank of photography statistics and anecdotes to be used in communications materials.
Administrative Reporting Project Management
  • Track and analyze the performance of digital communications and social media efforts. Provide regular reports and recommendations for improvement.
  • Contribute to and maintain editorial calendars.
  • Support the creation and adherence to communications workplans.
  • Perform other communications-related duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Bachelors degree
  • 1-3 years of experience in public relations marketing advertising or another communications-related field
  • Strong interest in social media marketing and trends
  • Proficiency with basic design tools photo editing software and short-form video creation
  • Comfort working on a collaborative team and with many project partners. Experience being a team leader a plus
  • Strong writing and editing skills and attention to detail
  • An understanding of branding visual identity and storytelling
