Salary: 33287 - 39129 (pro-rata for part-time & sessional)
Hours: 36 per week 39 weeks

This post is to work as part of the Deaf Support Team. The British Sign Language (BSL) tutor will:

• Teach BSL in educational establishments and to families.
• Provide training/create and deliver courses for parents and staff in BSL.

Applicants must have experience in teaching BSL to adults and working/engaging effectively with families and their deaf children and possess fluent BSL skills to SCQF 8 or above or equivalent.

If shortlisted for interview candidates will be required to provide a sample lesson plan as part of a writing assessment before they attend interview. A reading assessment and BSL skills test will also be required as part of the in-person interview process.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. Anunconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.

Experience:

• Teaching BSL to children or adults Working/engaging effectively with families and their deaf children
• Planning target setting and delivering programmes of work. (Desirable)

Knowledge skills and understanding:

• Good communication skills- BSL and written.
• Good basic education and standard of Maths and English to Core Skills 5 level or equivalent or previous relevant experience.
• Be child-focused and have the ability to acquire and apply the necessary knowledge within the school context about deaf and hearing childrens language learning.
• Ability to understand and apply effectively teaching techniques in teaching BSL.
• Good planning and organisational skills
• Computer literacy including word processing spreadsheets and confident use of email.
• An undergraduate degree. (Desirable)
• Awareness of health and safety regulations and child protection procedures. (Desirable)
• Awareness of needs of deaf and hearing children with additional support needs. (Desirable)
• Ability to plan a programme of study using SQA qualifications adapted for particular parent/pupil groups. (Desirable)

Qualifications and training:

• Fluent BSL skills to SCQF 8 or above or equivalent.
• Educated to degree level or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of skills through experience (Desirable)
• A BSL teaching qualification. (Desirable)

Job specific requirements:

• This is a peripatetic role that requires travel between settings. The applicant will be required to plan their time appropriately.
• A flexible approach to the working day is required to meet the needs of all BSL learners.
