Job Summary: The VAD Coordinator is an experienced Registered Nurse who participates in the clinical management of pre and post implant patients in collaboration with the APPs and physicians. The role functions as a clinical expert and leadership consultant within Emory Healthcare and the larger community ensuring high-quality efficient and compliant care for the VAD patient population across the continuum. Primary duties and responsibilities: Clinical Management and Patient Care: 1. Participates in the clinical management of pre and post implant patients in collaboration with the APPs and physicians. 2. Coordinates the clinical evaluation of potential VAD candidates. 3. Coordinates discharge plans and verifies patient knowledge base prior to discharge. 4. Provides follow-up consultation for discharged patients and sees patients at clinic visits. 5. Assesses and analyzes clinical findings to result in optimum goal achievement for patients in a cost effective manner. 6. Provides after-hours emergency call to patients and caregivers to include nights weekends and holidays with oversight by the Advanced Practice Providers and physicians. Education and Training: 1. Educates nursing staff and patient/caregiver on patient care maintaining VAD equipment and safety measures. 2. Provides education and support to community health care professionals who may encounter VAD patients. 3. Provides education including risks and benefits to potential VAD candidates and post implant patients throughout inpatient and outpatient phases. 4. Educates patients families and nursing staff regarding VAD evaluation process clinical management of patients discharge planning and ongoing education to promote health. 5. Responsible for the development of VAD patient and caregiver educational materials. 6. Develops education materials and provides classes for nursing staff and VAD team members. 7. Evaluates competency of clinical staff (inside and outside of the hospital) patients family members physicians and community health resources related to the care of patients with VADs. 8. Identifies competency/learning needs and collaborated with department director clinical coordinators and staff in designing orientation and on-going educational activities related to care of VAD patients. Coordination and Consultation: 1. Coordinates the clinical evaluation of potential VAD candidates. 2. Coordinates discharge plan to transition patient to the outpatient setting. 3. Acts as a consultant to referring community health care specialists and primary care providers. 4. Serves as a clinical expert and leadership consultant to nursing members of Emory Healthcare and to the larger community. 5. Assures that all VAD patients have an identified PCP and that these MDs receive correspondence and educational material on their VAD patients. Program Management and Compliance: 1. Manages VAD patient population to promote efficient cost effective quality care to both the patient and Emory Healthcare. 2. Develops policies and procedures for the delivery of care to the VAD population. 3. Ensures compliance with state federal and organizational guidelines and other regulatory agencies. 4. Works with the financial coordinator to provide information and assess insurance coverage for devices and post implant supplies/resources prior to device implant. 5. Provides input on financial strategies and operational planning issues related to the VAD population. 6. Collaborates with clinical pathway team and or appropriate leadership and implements procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness. 7. Develops resource materials for referring physicians. 8. Develops strategies to improve communication between the VAD program and outside providers. 9. Attends continuing education activities to maintain knowledge of current trends and practices. 10. Documents appropriate information in patients medical record. 11. Maintains a patient management system and collects and documents required regulatory and program specific data. 12. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications: Minimum required: Education - Bachelors Degree in Nursing. Experience - Must have four years of recent clinical experience as a Registered Nurse including two years in cardiology or cardiac surgery. Licensure - All nurses employed in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must have a valid active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board. Certification - 1. BLS. 2. If completing virtual care activities that may include multi-state practice an active compact/multistate license (eNLC) is required within 60 days of hire. Employees in role prior to 11/09/2025 will have until their next renewal date to achieve compact status Physical Requirements: (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking Occasional sitting Close eye work (computers typing reading writing) Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
