We are a well-established special educational needs (SEN) school in Birmingham providing specialist support to children and young people with a range of additional learning needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) ADHD communication difficulties and complex learning needs. We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join our team. This is an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children with complex needs supporting their learning communication and social development.
The SEN Teaching Assistant will provide direct and personalised support to pupils in the classroom and during other school activities. You will work closely with teachers therapists and support staff to implement individual education plans (IEPs) behaviour support strategies and targeted interventions.
You will be involved in small-group and one-to-one support helping pupils engage with learning develop independence and improve their social communication and emotional skills. The role requires patience adaptability and a thorough understanding of SEN approaches including strategies for supporting children with ASD ADHD and other developmental needs.
Support pupils with SEN and complex needs in classroom and group settings.
Assist in the implementation of IEPs behaviour support plans and personalised learning strategies.
Provide one-to-one and small group support for academic social and emotional development.
Use evidence-based approaches to encourage positive behaviour communication and engagement.
Support teachers in lesson delivery classroom management and preparation of resources.
Assist pupils with daily routines transitions and self-care tasks promoting independence.
Monitor and record pupil progress including behavioural observations learning milestones and intervention outcomes.
Collaborate with colleagues therapists and external agencies to ensure consistency of support across learning environments.
Attend meetings training sessions and professional development to stay up-to-date with SEN best practices and safeguarding requirements.
Promote a safe inclusive and nurturing classroom environment that respects the individual needs of every pupil.
The ideal candidate will:
Have experience working with children with SEN including ASD ADHD learning difficulties or complex needs.
Demonstrate patience empathy and resilience in supporting children with a variety of challenges.
Understand the principles of inclusive education and personalised learning.
Be able to implement behaviour management strategies effectively and consistently.
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills able to engage with pupils parents and staff.
Be confident in supporting academic social and emotional development and promoting independence.
Be committed to safeguarding child protection and professional ethics.
Hold relevant qualifications such as Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant SEN Support or equivalent experience.
Work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team including teachers therapists and pastoral staff.
Be proactive in problem-solving planning interventions and adapting strategies to meet individual pupil needs.
