The City of Johnson City is currently accepting applications for a Risk Management Generalist. The employee performs difficult technical and office support work assisting Risk Management personnel in a variety of risk management functions including investigating processing and adjusting workers compensation liability and third-party claims while maintaining confidential and sensitive information. Must be firm respectful and impartial and able to interact effectively and respectfully in conflict situations. Employees in this class are distinguished by the performance of a full range of risk management support duties as assigned within the Risk Management Department. Position requires thorough knowledge of departmental policies guidelines and state laws and the exercise of discretion and independent judgment in the interpretation of these policies and laws as they respond to a high volume of inquiries. The majority of work is highly independent and routine.
Essential Functions:
- Analyze complex data using a computer and generate reports from various databases keep and maintain detailed and accurate records physically and electronically including processing basic math and financial calculations.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing maintaining objectivity at all times.
- Establish interact and maintain relationships with both internal and external stakeholders in a professional confidential and appropriate manner.
- Make sound decisions based on factual information and determine pertinent facts from written material and observation.
- Organize prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment in order to provide timely service follow-up and meet deadlines.
- Claim services including contracted services such as medical case managers pharmacy benefit providers and medical bill adjusters. Can include damage assessment adjustment and negotiation and process claim-related release documents.
- Receive complaints and report claims to Citys insurer or TPA.
- Interact with Departments to investigate claims and provide reports to adjusters and case managers.
- Identify damage to City property caused by third parties determine subrogation potential obtain estimates issue demand letters pursue insurance claims against responsible parties collect recovery payments and report proceeds to departments.
- Counsel employees and assist with completion of accident and claim-related forms.
- Provide benefit counseling to employees for programs administered by the department
- Prepare reporting of new claims changes in work status and other claim related tasks.
- Proactively identify and analyze public risks and hazards and take corrective action as needed.
- Provide administrative support including answering phone calls responding to emails and handling incoming and outgoing mail
- Performs related tasks as required and assists other risk management personnel on an as needed basis
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of City policies local state and federal laws Bureau of Workers Compensation rules and regulations insurance regulations and practices and casualty claims adjustment
- Apply departmental policies in routine and extraordinary work situations.
- Works independently and makes sound decisions. Relies on Manager or Director only when necessary.
- Knowledge of laws regarding workers compensation liability and torts.
- Knowledge of computer database software and claims record keeping to include TOSHA recordkeeping regulations and reporting requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of conflict resolution skills and interviewing techniques.
- Knowledge of general medical terminology.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Tennessee Workers Compensation experience; Liability claims adjusting experience; minimum one to three years work experience in similar position or any equivalent combination of work experience and education. Pre-employment physical and background check required.
