An aerospace CNC machinist manufactures high-precision components for aircraft and spacecraft by operating and programming Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines to meet rigorous industry standards. This role requires a blend of technical expertise and meticulous attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities:
Setup and Operation: Set up and operate CNC machines (including 3-axis 5-axis mills lathes etc.) to perform precision machining operations.
Technical Interpretation: Read and accurately interpret complex engineering drawings blueprints specifications and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to determine machining operations and part requirements.
Programming: Write modify and optimize CNC programs (often using G-code and CAD/CAM software) to machine parts efficiently and accurately.
Tooling and Materials: Select and install appropriate tooling fixtures and materials (such as aluminum alloys titanium and composites) for each job considering material properties and cutting speeds/feeds.
Quality Control & Inspection: Monitor machine operations and inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments like micrometers calipers bore gauges and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) to ensure they meet tight tolerances and quality standards.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform routine maintenance on machines and equipment and diagnose/resolve issues related to operations tooling or programs.
Safety & Documentation: Adhere to all safety protocols maintain a clean and organized work area (e.g. 6S standards) and keep accurate records of production data and maintenance.
You must have:
Experience: Previous experience in an aerospace or high-precision manufacturing environment is typically required often a minimum of 2-3 years with advanced roles requiring more.
We value:
Proficiency in operating and programming CNC machinery (familiarity with control systems like Fanuc or Heidenhain is a plus).
Strong understanding of metallurgy and material science related to aircraft components.
Ability to work with extremely tight tolerances and high precision requirements.
Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is standard; formal training an apprenticeship or a relevant certification/degree in machining technology is often preferred.
Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail accuracy manual dexterity good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are essential.
