CREL Marketing & Communications Assistant

Office of Career Readiness & Experiential Learning (CREL)

Position Type: Paid student worker (up to 10 hours per week)
Work Period: Academic terms only
Reports to: Assistant Director of Career and Leadership Development
Internship Option: This position may be structured as an internship for eligible majors. Students are responsible for coordinating internship credit through their academic department.

Position Summary

The CREL Marketing & Communications Assistant is a creative motivated student leader responsible for developing and executing high-quality marketing materials and communication strategies that support all aspects of the Office of Career Readiness & Experiential Learning. This includes promoting career readiness experiential learning internships campus events and CREL resources through engaging visual content and digital platforms.

This role offers hands-on experience in marketing communications and design with the opportunity to shape CRELs brand presence across campus. The student in this position will collaborate closely with CREL staff while also taking initiative to bring new ideas to life and lead creative projects aligned with their interests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Marketing & Content Creation

  • Create impactful graphics flyers digital content and promotional materials tailored to CRELs diverse programs and initiatives.
  • Design and produce marketing materials for events workshops experiential learning opportunities and campus-wide outreach.
  • Design and assist with CREL-branded merchandise as needed.
  • Maintain and creatively utilize CRELs office mascot Captain Cappy across marketing materials social media stickers and promotional content.

Social Media & Digital Presence

  • Manage CRELs social media platforms (currently Instagram and Facebook) with opportunities to explore additional platforms based on student needs and engagement trends.
  • Develop maintain and adjust a semester-long content calendar with flexibility for weekly updates as needed.
  • Track analytics and engagement metrics to inform content strategy and continuous improvement.

Collaboration & Outreach

  • Collaborate with CREL staff to gather content ideas promote programs and ensure messaging aligns with office goals.
  • Assist with distributing flyers tabling and event promotion across campus as needed.

Special Projects (as availability and hours allow)

  • Develop and lead an ongoing marketing or communications project that supports CRELs visibility and outreach across campus.
    • This project should align with CRELs mission while reflecting the students personal interests and strengths.
    • The project may evolve continue or change across semesters depending on progress and goals.
  • Support other CREL initiatives and office needs as assigned.

Training Provided

  • Orientation to CRELs mission branding messaging and communication goals.
  • Training on office workflows expectations and collaboration practices.
  • Ongoing mentorship and feedback from CREL staff to support skill development and creative growth.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Attributes

  • A desire to be a role model and live out the ideals of a quality liberal arts education: a commitment to excellence integrity communication acceptance and shared responsibility for the success of Illinois College
  • Must be currently enrolled full-time have completed at least one semester of coursework at IC and not graduating in Spring 2026
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.30
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Initiative creativity integrity and responsibility
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to take ownership of projects and grow professionally

Preferred Skills (or willingness to learn)

  • Experience with design and marketing tools such as Canva Adobe Express Photoshop or similar platforms
  • Interest or background in marketing art/visual design communication or related fields
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital engagement strategies
  • Basic understanding of branding visual storytelling or content strategy

Work Schedule & Compensation

  • Approximately 45 hours per week during this academic term (subject to change in future semesters based on office needs and feasibility)
  • Flexible scheduling with a student-first philosophy
  • Primarily based in the CREL office with some campus-wide outreach and event support
  • Hourly rate determined by campus student employment guidelines and will be $12/hr
