Director of Animal Care Services

The Director of Animal Care Services oversees all operations of the citys Animal Care Services Department. This role leads the teams responsible for field enforcement shelter operations adoptions and veterinary services. The Director ensures humane animal care strong public safety practices and effective community outreach while managing staff budgets and departmental strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage all daily operations of the Animal Care Services Department
Develop programs that support responsible pet ownership and reduce stray animal populations
Oversee enforcement of animal control laws ordinances and regulations
Serve as the citys Animal Control Authority and provide recommendations on policy updates
Ensure humane shelter operations including intake housing care and euthanasia practices
Manage the departments budget and financial resources
Represent the department to city leadership community groups and the media
Build community education and outreach programs focused on licensing vaccinations and spay/neuter initiatives
Coordinate with other city departments and outside agencies to support animal care efforts
Set performance standards for all divisions and monitor operational metrics
Provide leadership coaching and professional development for managers and staff
Ensure all staff follow ethical legal and safety standards
Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree in Public Administration Business Administration Animal Science or a related field
Ten years of progressive experience in a municipal public sector or nonprofit animal shelter environment
Five years of supervisory or management experience
Strong knowledge of animal welfare practices shelter operations and regulatory requirements
Experience managing budgets staff and departmentlevel operations
