Job Summary

Overview

This AOT Technician III is a front-line position for the Agency of Transportation (AOT). The Transportation Management Center (TMC) is seeking a highly motivated ambitious and creative individual to join our team and support the continued growth of our program. The successful incumbent will work in the Operations & Safety Bureaus TMC maintaining and disseminating real-time situational awareness of statewide travel conditions facilitating traffic operations coordinating resource sharing among districts and serving as a communications hub for the Agency and external partners. This position is being recruited for the third shift with training occurring primarily during the first shift.

  • Duties include:
    Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) operation
  • New England 511 operation
  • Social media outreach
  • Remote operation of changeable message signs
  • Monitoring and reporting on road weather conditions
  • Maintaining awareness of statewide travel conditions including construction projects weather conditions threats and hazards vehicle crashes etc.
  • Coordinating with partner agencies including the Vermont State Police AOT District personnel emergency dispatch centers Vermont Emergency Management Department of Motor Vehicles Enforcement and Permitting and local law enforcement and public safety agencies
  • Evaluating and recommending super load truck permits based on routing
  • Maintaining readiness to shift into crisis operations mode at a moments notice

Work is performed in a standard office setting that operates at a fast pace. This role requires the ability to remain calm and effective under stress while managing multiple responsibilities at once. The position provides 24/7/365 coverage so employees must be willing to work rotating shifts and mandatory overtime or stand-by status may be required. The work also involves operating several software systems simultaneously in a high-volume time-sensitive environment.

Successful candidates will bring strong communication skills with the ability to convey clear concise information both verbally and in writing. The role requires a high level of attention to detail strong situational awareness and the ability to prioritize competing requests in real time. Proficiency with digital tools including Microsoft Office and core computer functions is essential along with the ability to interact professionally and respectfully with agency staff law enforcement and the public.

Candidates should also be comfortable using and learning new technologies. Familiarity with social media platforms is helpful as is the ability to learn and work with transportation management tools such as Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS) Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) Changeable Message Signs (CMS) and other Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Work is performed in a standard office setting. This position has the option for a hybrid work setting with three (3) days required in person. There is no requirement for field work.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office laboratory and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials traffic hazards and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds traverse rough wooded and steep terrain travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Out of state travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in engineering technology environmental technology surveying construction technology architecture construction management or related technical field AND one (1) year of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning surveying design inspection construction research and statistics testing investigation maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.

OR

Associate degree in civil engineering environmental technology engineering technology surveying construction technology architecture or related field AND three (3) years of experience as described above.

OR

High school graduation or equivalent AND five (5) years of experience as described above.

OR

One (1) year as an AOT Technician II with the State of Vermont.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as a public safety dispatcher first responder or in a related field

Familiarity with the Incident Command System (ICS) and emergency preparedness

Basic knowledge of GIS mapping databases and information technologies

Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid drivers license.
