ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: For purposes of 42 USC 12101:
50% (1) Maintain required certifications fitness level and alertness to any emergency. Scan and monitor all patrons in facility and respond immediately in the event of an emergency according to department procedures guidelines and standards. Follow procedures for clearing the facility due to inclement weather emergencies rest periods drills and closing. Perform rescuing resuscitating administering first aid activities accurately completing all documentation as required.
30% (2) Assist in maintaining the facility in a safe and clean matter. Assist in the implementing of swimming lessons and special events. Required to teach or assist with various levels of swim lessons.
15% (3) Attend all assigned meetings assist with in-service trainings and inform supervisors of suggestions or ideas that could better the City operation. Enforce safety policies and procedures and maintains disciplinary action as necessary. Maintain equipment and report problems to supervisor. Inform supervisor of items needing special attention and communicate with staff. Assist in the development of goals and objectives.
(4) Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
5% (5) Performs other job related duties as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS: An example of acceptable qualifications:
Must be at least 16 years of age. Enrollment in High School or higher education; or possession of High School Diploma or equivalent (i.e. G.E.D.).
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must be American Red Cross (or equivalent) CPR/AED and First Aid certified; certified American Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguarding. Preferred certifications: Certified American Red Cross or equivalent Water Safety Instructor; American Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguard Instructor.
The City will pay for required certifications.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS: (*indicates developed after employment)
Knowledge of:*City and departmental goals objectives and functions; lifeguarding and rescue practices; first aid.
Skill in:customer service; interpersonal communication; swimming.
Ability to: read analyze and understand various directives and regulations; apply principles to solve practical problems; deal with variety of variables in familiar context; communicate effectively and develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees coworkers department heads officials and general public; travel to and gain access to work site(s); speak effectively before large groups; use and operate AED backboard C-collar facemask lifeguard tube shepherds hook umbrella skimmer whistle ADA lift various first aid and cleaning supplies etc.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED: The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:
Employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment as well as aquatic facilities (e.g. chlorine muriatic acid toner correction fluid etc.); is exposed to possible injury from unclean or unsanitary conditions; works with moving mechanical parts of equipment of machines; is exposed to hot cold wet humid and windy weather conditions; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; sharp objects needles and medical instruments; blood bodily tissues and fluids; potentially dangerous/fatal infectious diseases; is exposed to possible injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines; may work an irregular shift; may work in and around noisy conditions; has exposure to life threatening situations; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid.
Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings this is considered light work.
In cases of emergency unpredictable situations and/or department needs may be required to lift push pull and/or carry objects heavier than D.O.L. strength ratings recommend.

We almost never cut off the class number because we have several LGI. If we get to 10 participants we will just add another instructor and allow another 10 so no rush to register for those classes quite yet.
We will also be running lifeguard classes for any new guards or guards whose certification has expired. Those dates:
