Description of Work

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety has an internship opportunity with Victims Compensation Services for the Summer of 2026. If you are a current college student or recent college graduate please continue reading because this internship could be the perfect fit for you.

Victims Compensation Services reimburses citizens who suffer medical expenses and lost wages as a result of being an innocent victim of a crime committed in North Carolina. Victims of rape assault child sexual abuse domestic violence and drunk driving as well as the families of homicide victims are eligible to apply for financial help.

This internship opportunity will allow students to:
Learn the Victims Compensation Services (VCS) Programs
Become knowledgeable of the policies and statutes that govern the program services provided
Train in program operations to aid in the ability to engage in research and outreach
Learn the intake investigation examination processes and become acknowledgeable about Commission Meetings
Research community-based organizations supporting underserved populations (African-American/Black citizens families males rural areas Hispanic and Asian Communities/Organizations) directly impacting these communities to provide information and awareness of the VCS Programs

The student will function as a Claims & Outreach Process Intern. Specific responsibilities will include outreach telephone calls (incoming/outgoing) investigate and examine claims data entry process mail filing faxing and research.

Ideal applicants will possess the ability to interpret and apply statutes; active listening skills; excellent communication skills; good organizational skills; excellent writing skills; and the ability to follow directions.

This internship is expected to start on May 18 2026 and continue through July 24 2026. The work schedule is part-time (up to 30 hours per week) Monday -Friday. The rate of pay is $18.00 per hour.

The selected intern will be required to provide a letter of recommendation from a professional reference or academic advisor/professor before being hired.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.

The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) is REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Management Preferences including Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) are not required but may be used to determine the pool of most qualified applicants. Managers may also choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.

Work experience may include internships volunteerism and full and part-time work. Management Preferences

  • Must be currently enrolled in college or a recent college graduate. NOTE: Recent graduates are those who have graduated within the last 6 months.
  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree (or a recent graduate) in Criminal Justice Criminology Counseling Social Work Sociology Behavioral Science Forensic Science or Human Services.
