Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students in a unique residential setting.Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program.

Description of Work

This position performs a variety of duties related to the care of children with visual impairments. The duties include direct supervision of students in the cottages dining hall on transportation routes and on community outings; to include helping with homework daily living skills (dressing eating personal care etc.) social-behavioral management skills and leisure-recreational activities. Additionally an individual in this position will help transport visually impaired students; drive State activity buses vans and automobiles; act as a monitor in vehicles and on the charter bus. This position will also be responsible for maintaining records following and implementing procedures/policies and other assigned residential program partners with the instructional program to provide a variety of enriching activities in academics recreation visual arts and through community involvement. Employees will be responsible to align the residential learning environment with the ECC (Expanded Core Curriculum).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

50% Personal Care of Students*

Monitors students rooms at least every 15 minutes to ensure students are sleeping comfortably and are not having problems. Special care must be practiced with some students to identify symptoms of potential seizures. Records sleep patterns to assist with medication reviews.

Assists with medications and monitors reactions as directed by the Student Health Center.

Assists students with walkers and transfers and lifts wheelchair-bound students.

Implements therapy activities and procedures as directed by the occupational or physical therapists.

Carries out suicidal precaution procedures following procedure as needed.

Implements the Independent Living Skills Domain of the Student Life Education Framework such as but not limited to:Performs or assists with tooth brushing and oral care bathing washing and styling hair shaving selecting clothing dressing eating toileting making beds taking out trash dusting vacuuming and cleaning rooms washing and drying clothes packing suitcases etc.

Provides an environment conducive to learning for students by assisting with homework and leisure activities.

Directs students in preparation for school or activities and oversees students in the cleaning of their rooms and personal items; keeps check on the condition of student clothing and documents clothing needs.

Provides transportation services by monitoring students in state vehicles or on charter buses and driving a state vehicle (van car SUV or activity bus) as students come to and from school as well as to and from any other school activities. Employees must follow all safety measures including taking Activity Bus Evacuation General Transportation Charter Bus NCI Code of Conduct Blood borne Pathogens Epi-Pen Safety and any other trainings that will ensure student safety. Employee must be alert to signs and symptoms of illness and acts appropriately and follows state federal DMV DPI ESDB and GMS transportation policies and procedures.

Provides supervision as students leave the cottages dining hall health center and go to school daily.

Assists students in preparations for scheduled activities and escorts students to appointments as needed.

Provides privacy monitors and assists students in maintaining individual living areas.

Implements documents and maintains tracking methods to provide safety such as fire drill student incident MIT reports safety check sheets refrigerator temperature charts census forms cottage placement lists cottage notebooks student logs progress notes etc.25% Student Interaction and Interventions*.

Monitors students behavior on an ongoing basis to evaluate safety program involvement changes in behavior due to medication changes and to ensure that behaviors do not relate to risk of seizure.

Maintains contact with academic teachers to provide information about homework health and behavioral issues that may be pertinent to the school.

Monitors cottage activities before school providing supervision and/or consultation.

Assists with admissions by orienting new students to the cottages explaining the routines procedures policies and schedules.

Obtains certification in Nonviolent Crisis Interventions (NCI) in order to intervene in situations as necessary in an appropriate way and in accordance with GMS policy.

Initiates structured interventions for inappropriate behaviors based on NCI.

Reports early signs of behavior and mood changes to appropriate professionals (Behavior Program Technicians Psychologist Social Worker Student Health Center staff Safety Officer Guidance Counselors and/or other necessary academic program personnel) and takes appropriate measures to decrease escalating agitation.

Disciplines students according to the OES Code of Conduct when students violate or disregard rules and regulations.

Responds to specific life-threatening situations and takes immediate action according to established procedures (first aid measures basic life support contacting the Student Health Center etc.). Accompanies student to emergency room as needed and assigned. Provides appropriate and timely documentation.

Carries out school policies and maintains appropriate vigilance for students on all procedures/precautions.

Consults with Behavior Program Technicians Psychologist Social Worker Student Health Center staff Safety Officer Guidance Counselors and/or academic program personnel regarding behaviors and appropriate interventions.5% Housekeeping Responsibilities*

Completes linen inventories weekly assembles laundry checks it as it is returned and stores in the proper place.

Performs housekeeping duties assigned for the shift according to needs such as but not limited to vacuuming cleaning kitchen areas and appliances cleaning the restrooms and commons areas in the cottages/houses making beds emptying trash cleaning refrigerators sweeping dusting folding linen etc.

Reports needed cottage/houses repairs to supervisor.

Inventories and requisitions housekeeping supplies.

Supervises and assists students with care of personal clothing and other personal items.

Maintains cottage/houses cleanliness.

Monitors thermostats water usage and lights following environmental procedures and guidelines completing all required documentation10% Documentation and Communication*.

Communicates all pertinent information regarding student status management at shift changes on safety check sheets census forms cottage placement lists cottage notebooks student logs progress notes etc.

Participates in group discussions conducted by Supervisor Student Life Director Behavior Technician In-Service Trainers or School Director.

Carries out scheduled rounds (15-minute safety check sheets) and provides and distributes appropriate documentation.

Provides documentation of behavior changes sleep patterns and reactions to medications.

Attends all mandatory meetings trainings in-services orientations and staff development trainings.

Evaluates and maintains required records on students including completing Progress Notes assessments or evaluations on Independent Living Skills according to Student Life Education Framework.

Completes timesheets leave forms and other personnel documentation accurately meeting deadlines.

Completes student incident reports within 24 hours and gives to appropriate person.

Completes telephone logs luggage forms transportation forms etc. accurately meeting deadlines.

Communicates issues and concerns to supervisor in timely and professional Safe Environment.

Takes precautions to ensure safe environment.

Monitors and reports unsafe equipment.

Properly stores and uses cleaning supplies.

Maintains security of cottages/houses by keeping required doors locked.

Reports broken or hazardous equipment/furniture.

Keeps floors free of spills and unsafe objects.

Ensures smoking regulations are followed.

Participates in fire tornado and safety drills.

Properly disposes of all biohazard materials and disinfects area.

Follows Environmental Procedures and GuidelinesWorking Relations/Professional Conduct.

Reports to work on time and is ready for shift duties at designated time.

Follows the signing in and out procedures.

Follows procedure for giving advance notice for absence/tardiness.

Schedules vacation comp time or other leave 5 days in advance.

Does not abuse sick time.

Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience (Children & Youth) High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in an age- appropriate childcare setting or a goal- oriented setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
