  • Panama-Buena Vista Union School District invites well-qualified candidates to apply for the position of Speech Specialist. The District is looking for a speech specialist who evaluates and treats school-aged children with verbal communications (speech and hearing) and cognitive disorders. Provides assessment consultation and in-service training to other caregivers and instructional support. The Speech Specialist is a professional position that requires specific training in speech and language therapy.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Using generally accepted tests and assessment techniques and procedures diagnoses and treats the communicative abilities of students in at least these areas: articulation/phonology cognition motor speech dysphasia voice fluency craniofacial anomalies hearing and child and adult language.
    2. Works with multi-disciplinary team that includes teachers and paraprofessionals to develop individual education plans based on assessments. The plans include instructional and remedial exercises.
    3. Develops short and long range therapeutic goals and treatment programs to meet students individual needs in physicians audiologists psychologists social workers physical and occupational therapists couselors and teachers conjunction with individual education plans.
    4. Educates students and parents of the behaviors and activities that can characterizecommunicative disorders and develops exercises learning and social experiences andindividual education plans to enhance communicative abilities.
    5. Integrates services with instructional technology and consistent with common corecurriculum and methods to help students accomplish academic goals.
    6. Follows up with students who have been dismissed from special programs to evaluateacademic and behavioral progress.
    7. Serves as a resource member on a student study team for one or more schools.
    8. Participates in multi-disciplinary staff conferences with school county and community professionals.
    9. Educates school administrators teachers and support staff with speech/language and hearing pathology services and appropriate interventions.
    10. Plans and facilitates parent and teacher conferences that involve verbal and cognitivespeech/language and hearing matters. Confers with parents and professional staff on afrequent and timely basis regarding each students progress.
    11. Participates in the development and/or selection of materials that enhance learning andenhancement of communicative skills and abilities.
    12. Works and interacts with peers as individuals and/or in team/group settings in aprofessional manner that contributes to the Districts academic achievement goals.
    13. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new developments in the profession includingmethods that would serve education goals.
    14. Provides in-service demonstrations andassistance to other teachers and support staff on processesand techniques that reinforcespeech and hearing therapies.
    15. Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIILITIES:

    1. Attends professional conference workshops and advanced courses in communicative and allied professional fields
    2. Reads current journals and literature in communications and allied professional fields
    3. Reviews new materials and equipment
    4. Actively participates in local state and national professional speech and hearing organizations
    5. Attends local meetings when requested and scheduled professional staff meetings
    6. Speaks to professional parent and community groups as requested.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Bachelors degree from a regionally-accredited college or university in Speech-Language Pathology Communicative Disorder or a closely aligned field or a valid California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Education Specialist Instruction Credential or older equivalent credential.
    2. Verification of application efforts to Commission-approved SLP Services Credential program.
    3. Ability to relate positively to children and instill in them a desire to improve.
    4. Ability to relate positively to parents school personnel and other lay and professional people.
    5. Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner; present a favorable personal appearance; and demonstrate personality characteristics which enhance effectiveness in a school setting.
    6. Ability to communicate effectively with a pleasant voice and correct articulation; use appropriate professional language skills in writing and speaking.
    7. Demonstrate positive attitude and desire to improve professional knowledge and competence.

    SALARY AND TERMS OF SERVICE
    Annual Salary Range:$85018 - $93332with 5 incremental steps184 working days per year eight (8) hours per day. Step placement on the salary schedule is determined by the number of years of prior experience in the position District currently contributes up to $19793.00 towards family dental medical and vision insurance plans along with a life insurance plan for the employee.
