Position Summary:
The Director of Nursing (DON) for Oncology Cardiology and Interventional Radiology provides strategic operational and clinical leadership across multiple complex service lines. This role ensures high-quality patient-centered care promotes excellence in clinical outcomes and drives continuous improvement in efficiency safety staff engagement and financial performance.

The Director oversees nursing leadership and clinical operations for Oncology and Cancer Care services Cardiology and nursing services within Interventional Radiology. This role oversees two Nurse Navigators (Breast Health and Cancer Care Center) and a Nurse Manager for Cardiology and Interventional Radiology. Additionally the Director functions as the organizational liaison for Sleep Center operations and EEG services coordinating care and performance with outsourced neurology services.

This is a hospital-based leadership role with responsibility for operations quality patient experience and budgeting across all assigned areas.

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement short- and long-range strategic plans aligned with organizational goals service line priorities and national benchmarks for Oncology Cardiology Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology.
  • Identify and act on growth opportunities service line expansion and emerging market trends including navigation services diagnostic and interventional capabilities and ambulatory growth.
  • Foster strong collaboration with physician leaders medical directors radiologists cardiologists oncologists and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Serve as the nursing and operational liaison for the Sleep Center and EEG services ensuring effective coordination with the outsourced neurology group.

Operational Oversight

  • Provide direct leadership supervision mentorship and performance management for the Nurse Manager and Nurse Navigators within scope.
  • Ensure efficient daily operations across all assigned departments including patient flow throughput access and care coordination.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements accreditation standards and best practices (e.g. Joint Commission CMS state and federal regulations).
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience reduce variation and improve operational efficiency and staff productivity.
  • Oversee staffing models schedules and resource allocation to meet clinical and operational demands.
  • Ensure proper functioning maintenance and utilization of diagnostic interventional and procedural equipment and supplies.

Financial Management

  • Prepare manage and monitor departmental budgets including labor supplies and capital forecasting.
  • Analyze financial performance productivity and utilization metrics; implement corrective actions as needed to meet fiscal goals.
  • Partner with finance supply chain and revenue cycle teams to support cost containment charge capture and revenue optimization.

Clinical Leadership & Quality

  • Promote evidence-based practice clinical excellence and continuous quality improvement across all service lines.
  • Ensure adherence to patient safety standards infection prevention protocols and quality benchmarks.
  • Lead and support quality initiatives audits and performance improvement plans.
  • Support professional development engagement and retention of nursing and support staff through coaching mentorship and performance management.

Patient Experience & Engagement

  • Champion a patient-centered culture that emphasizes compassionate care care coordination and service excellence.
  • Use patient experience data and feedback to drive improvement initiatives and service recovery strategies.
  • Partner with nurse navigators to ensure seamless patient transitions and enhanced care coordination particularly for oncology and breast health patients.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelors degree in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Masters degree in Nursing (MSN) Healthcare Administration (MHA) Business Administration (MBA) or related field strongly preferred

Licensure

  • Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment

Certifications

  • BLS required
  • Leadership or specialty certifications (e.g. NE-BC OCN CCRN CEN or radiology/interventional certifications) preferred

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience in an acute care hospital setting
  • Prior experience in Oncology Cardiology Diagnostic Imaging Interventional Radiology or related procedural areas highly desirable.

  • While the role supports flexible scheduling the Director is accountable for 24-hour operational oversight of assigned departments and must be available to address urgent clinical operational or administrative issues as needed.

Assures quality control

  • Prepares standard solutions and reagents and maintains Laboratory equipment in good working order.
  • Carries out all activities following established procedures to assure attainment of quality control standards. Complies with all safety and related rules/regulations.

Performs related duties

  • In absence of Supervisor or as assigned assumes responsibility for section activities.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.
  • Troubleshoots technical problems involving chemicals and equipment.

Educational / Minimum requirements:

  • High School diploma or High School Equivalency Required.
  • Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
  • General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by the Hospital.

Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Adaptability and flexibility necessary for work schedule and patient care requirements. Data entry computer knowledge customer service skills are required. Good command of the English language computer skills and medical terminology ICD-9 coding medical office/ hospital experience desired. Strong attention to detail is needed as well.

Physical Requirements:

  • Walking standing sitting bending required. Must work under the stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy. Position requires ability to constantly lift light objects less than 20 lbs. perform moderately difficult manipulative skills arm-hand steadiness and hand-eye coordination skills; walk stand and sit for prolonged periods; see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises.

Work Environment:

  • Employee may frequently be exposed to blood body tissues and/or fluids and hazardous waste materials. Proper PPE is supplied by the employer.

Cognitive Requirements:

  • Position requires ability to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must be able to understand and relate to the concept behind specific ideas and remember multiple tasks given to self and others over long periods of time able to communicate verbally using advanced level vocabulary.
