JOB TITLE: Fleet Technician
Harris County Emergency Services District No. 17 (HCESD17 or District) is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Fleet Technician.

HCESD17 is a fire department providing services to residents in Harris County. The service area is twenty-six (26) square miles on the north side of Houston serving both commercial and residential areas. The population served by the district is approximately 100000. The typical call volume per year is around 3600 calls and we maintain four (4) staffed stations an administrative building and a training field.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Fleet Technician under the general direction of the Fleet Manager will be responsible for all preventative maintenance and any and all repairs needed of the District fleet. Documentation of all repairs and organization and management of parts and tools is also required. This role will also assist in the maintenance of heavy machinery in and around the District.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
While always performing under the latest applicable laws regulations and safety standards our Fleet Technician will perform routine maintenance and repair on all District apparatus vehicles and equipment.
Coordinating with Fleet Manager to schedule preventive maintenance and ensure fleet downtime is kept to a minimum.
Coordinate with any outside vendors for parts and repairs while maintaining parts inventory.
Diagnose issues through visual computer software and manual inspection.
Troubleshoot and repair all electrical mechanical and/or hydraulic systems in all District fleet and equipment.
Fabricate specialized items needed for storage racks and equipment which may include welding fabricating and assembly.
Perform routine servicing and preventive maintenance such as checking and replacing fluid levels filters lubricating parts repairing brakes and a/c rotating and replacing tires replacing belts and hoses flushing of fluids washing of parts apparatus and shop disposal of regulated waste materials and any other items as directed.
Maintaining all documentation and logs for repair work preventive maintenance inspection warranty and all other recordkeeping requirements pursuant to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and/or other regulatory agencies.
Ability to operate and drive to and from destinations as assigned by Fleet Manager.
Always maintain communication with Fleet Manager on status of fleet.
Stay current on new and improved parts repair techniques and standards.
While unlikely the Fleet Technician can be requested at night or on weekends for an emergency repair.
Abide by all Department rules and policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED ABILITIES:
The Fleet Technician will be a highly motived individual with a vast knowledge of emergency vehicle maintenance and repair. While utilizing a variety of tools schematics manuals self-knowledge and direction this individual will keep the fleet well cared for and in service to care for our community needs. Exercising critical thinking and working as a team will help this individual excel at complicated projects. Maintaining a friendly attitude and building professional relationships will go a long way to growing a large network of trusted vendors in this industry. Maintaining an organized shop and schedule with well designed objectives is a must.


PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED along with five (5) years of emergency vehicle repair and maintenance work.
Preferred Certifications:
Fire apparatus Technician Level I
T4 Truck Brakes
T5 Truck Suspension
F1 Maintenance
F2 Design
Within one (1) year from hire must obtain the following:
Any missing from the above Level I list and;
Fire apparatus Technician Level II
T2 Truck Diesel Engines
T3 Truck Drive Train
T6 Truck Electrical Systems
F3 Pumps and Accessories
F4 Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems EVT
A/C License


REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Class B Texas Drivers License with an acceptable driving record
High School Diploma or GED
Requires an acceptable background check medical and drug testing
Yearly NFPA 1582 Physical Provided by the District


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
A combination of standing reaching feeling stooping kneeling crawling pushing pulling hearing seeing and lifting are common practices. At times may be required to lift and exert force up to one hundred (100) pounds.
While the primary workplace setting will be in the maintenance facility or occasionally at a desk in front of a computer there will be times the Fleet Technician will be outside exposed to cold heat smoke rain dirt dust pollen and most weather types. Exposure to caustic or toxic chemicals related to this field is possible.
Bright dim and/or flashing lights and loud noises are an often occurrence as this is an emergency service field.

All hand tools and power tools necessary for heavy truck repair

Air conditioning repair tools


HOURS:
The Fleet Technician will be assigned to work M-F 8-5 but can be required to work some weekends and nights during an emergency situation.


COMPENSATION:
Wage - $75000.00 annually Hourly Rate $36.06
Overtime after 40 hours paid at 1.5-times hourly rate FLSA Non-exempt

Insurance Medical vision dental covered 100% employee 80% dependents. Life Employees are covered with Basic and GTL Dependent or Additional Life can be purchased.
Vacation time Accrued based on years of service 2 weeks to start.
Sick time 120 hours per year prorated to start date.
Retirement Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS) 2:1 Match 7% Required Employee Contribution. 457(b) available.
